Toyota question
My boss's father-in-law has a '92 Tercel he wants to sell me for $100. Car looks great inside and out, but it has a rod knocking. I can get a JY engine pretty cheap (or free...). How bad is it to replace the engine? Never done a Front drive car before so it'll all be new to me.
I've been looking left and right for a little Mustang 4 cylinder car do drive back & forth to work, but I can't find anything that I want. Looking for a 5 speed car, EFI is a must...body doesn't have to be perfect and really neither does the engine or transmission. Just needs to run and drive basically. Of all the times I've wanted to find another Fox mustang, I can't find a 4 cylinder car anywhere that's fairly cheap. $1500 is the max I'd pay...found one the other day at a guy's house for $1300, looked good ('93 LX hatchback 2.3 auto) but the transmission did not work. I offered him $800...and he hasn't called back. Funny thing, when I had my '84 5.0 car, I found 4 cylidner cars everywhere for $100-$300. Didn't need another one so I passed 'em up. Now I can't even find ONE! I'd even travel if the deal was right.
Figured if I could pick this tercel up for $100 and put another couple bills into it, it'd be a good parts chaser. The Lightning is getting miles racked up on it, and the interior is getting filthy from work. Need a beater car for daily stuff.

Re: Toyota question
Tercels are easy, heck you can yank those out in no time.
Just be sure when you drop the new engine in and hook things up that you don't confuse three hoses under the intake, all three are close together and about the same size, two are vacuum and one is coolant! If you get'em switched you'll know by all of the smoke that pours out!

If nothing else, they have compact car Demo Derbies down your way for when the Toyopet goes to H*ll, no?.... As for the 4 cyl. FoxStangs, the clean ones up my way either have become drag cars or (more likely) are running the dirt and asphalt ovals. These cars make awesome handling racers and have replaced the Pintos and Mustang IIs in the RWD 4 cyl. divisions. I'd like to find a solid bodied one minus motor/tranny myself. The '92 Notchback I use as a beater's unibody is getting soft in spots from road salt. At 160K+ miles, other than a rear main leak, the 2300/AOD keeps going like the Eveready Bunny...

Re: Toyota question
Well, yeah, they have demo derbys all over down here. I thought about that too. I went over to pick the car up today and the owner was out of town...I kind of figured he would be considering that it was the 4th of july. Anyway, I decided to make the best of a day off...loaded up the fishin stuff & went up to the lake for a while. On the way back I spotted a '66 Ford Anglia. Kind of a neat little car. It's in really good shape...first one I've ever seen. Those are british, right? Guy shot me a price on it, but it doesn't run....etc...needs lots of work to make it road worthy. I'd rather pick up the toyota for a little more money and make a halfway reliable DD out of it. If I had a place to keep a few cars, I'd get the Anglia and stash it away until I had the time/money/place to work on it. Me thinks a 514" BBF would fit just fine.

Re: Toyota question
Yep, Anglias are British and the '66s look great. If I remember right, these came with the 1600cc Kent motor which was the '71-'72 Pinto's standard engine.. That's also the same engine used in Formula Ford road racers and it has good performance potential. A BBF would be nasty but I'd have to think about hopping up a 1600 and building a corner carver. Surely you have room for just ONE more car..

I was unaware a 1600 was ever put in the Pinto... I owned a few as a kid and they all had standrd issue 2000's in them, or the occasional 2300.
Confusedly yours,
Gary

The 1600s weren't too common. These were OHV motors, not cammers. I'm not sure whether I ever owned a Pinto powered by one. But while working for GM building Chevy Vegas in late 1970, I considered buying a new Pinto. The sales brochure touted the 1600cc mill in the standard Pinto's economy and the 2000 in the Pinto GT (which was never put into production.) as the "performer."....
Here's Wikipedia's engine lineup for the Pinto:
