Just bought a 460 long block

A buddy of mine had a 460 long block sitting in his garage with no project to put it in. He finally talked me into buying it. It mostly assembled and needs intake, carb, rockers, timing chain cover, and a dizzy. It has forged TRW pistons, not sure of the specs but he will have them for me later. He thinks it should have close to 10:1 compression. Custom grind Crower cam, specs he will have for me later. Its never been fired either. Looks like a well built engine. Here are part numbers for what it has. The Block is a D1VE. D0OE rods, C8VE heads which have a lot of porting, screw in studs and guide plates, new Manley valves and smoothed out surfaces in the ports. They look like cobra jet heads now. We spun the engine around for about an hour checking it all over and spinning the crank. Looks pretty nice to me. I will probably kill myself if I stick it in my Mach 1.

Re: Just bought a 460 long block

Going by your numbers it appears to be a 1971 year block. The heads are 1971 & should have 2.08 int. vlv - 1.66 exh.vlv.

Actually, the heads are 1968 castings (C=1960's, D=1970's, etc). 1968-1970 heads (C8VE, C9VE, D0VE) are same design and valve size and are the more desirable common heads (i.e. not cobra jet or PI heads). Sounds like you have a good motor as the D1VE block is good one as well.

Sounds like a decent motor, also check-out www.460ford .com for additional info.

Like has been said already the heads are not 71's, C=60's, 8=1968. They are Small Chamber heads and as far as stock small castings are more desirable. Thay can make some good number and perfrom very good with the right work and parts.

Re: Just bought a 460 long block

Yeah, the castings are 1968 castings. The engine was pulled from a 71 Lincoln. This engine before being rebuilt took a big 4wd truck to a high 15 second quarter. My little 302 in my mach 1 could only pull a 16.1 at 4k feet and it only weighs in at 3300lbs with driver. If I drop it in my 69, I need to get the supporting equipment to go with it (frame reinforcement etc.) Couldn't pass the deal up and I hope it makes some decent power when completed.

Re: Just bought a 460 long block

That article is my inspiration for that. Don't know when it will be complete as my car needs a lot of work before that engine can go in. I was just planning to do a warmed over 351w but I am not sure my car would even be up for that with the couple problems it has. Now I need to get some money and go see Tom. :P

Re: Just bought a 460 long block

As stated earlier, go to 460ford.com :: Index. Its the best place to go for info on 385 (429-460)series engines. They also have a classified section that you may be able to pickup the parts your missing, for reasonible money

Re: Just bought a 460 long block

Does anyone know why that 460 site isn't accepting any more registrations? No one in recent history gets a confirmation e-mail as far as I can see. I have a 460 also, but can't post yet to ask questions.
