Re: Location, Location, Location
Seem like a lot of West Coast guys, which is fun because we get different perspectives on things.

I agree with Tony408! Us Right Coasters do enjoy the antics of you folks on the Left Side.
But what amazes me the most is not so much the cars or the attitude, but the geography!
Some of you guys live in a state that's so big, you can fly for an hour or two and still be in the same state, whereas here in Connecticut, 65 miles in any direction from where I live, I'm in another state or the Long Island Sound. We have to travel to New York or New Hampshire for a decent drag strip (Connecticut Dragway closed years ago due to noise and politics, but did get to see Bob Tasca work his Ford magic there). Would be cool to have an FM reunion somewhere in the central U.S. to put a face to a name

Re: Location, Location, Location
It's funny tho', up here in the northwest anyone into motorsports of any kind are viewed as the absolute spawn of demons.
Used to have drag boat races on Green Lake, a small couple hundred acre lake just north of the downtown area. Then the zoo (about 5 miles away) got some snow leopards and it turned out the males couldn't get it up while the boats were running so no more drag boats.
Hydroplane racing has always been an anchor event in Seattle. I remember going to Lake Washington in the late 50's to watch. Then more as I got older and could really party. Now, they're all turbine boats, no more thunder boats and the general population is trying to do away with that too because of the noise.
Used to be five primary dragstrips, Arlington, Pacific Raceways, Puyallup Raceway (owned by Craig Breedlove), Shelton and Bremerton. Now it's just pacific and Bremerton, and Bremerton is now requiring mufflers. NASCAR tried to come to town buth the NIMBY crowds ran 'em off.
My impression of the east and southeast regions are racetracks in every county and circle tracks on every corner.
Yeah, the left coast may have bigger states but I think youse guys have a higher tolerance level for racing.

Tho' this "conversation" is mutating into something different than your initial intent, there are a lot of guys here who do their racing under the cover of darkness and quiet streets with some serious machinery. We have several circle tracks for the roundy-rounders to play and a few Nascar drivers have been borne from New England and we even have Lime Rock where the elite come to socialize , but there really is no motorsports arenas here.
It must have been cool to see and hear those big hydro's churning up the waters. As an aside, good luck with your Falcon's assembly and teach Scott and Sam as much as you can! Us gearheads are a dying breed. I wish your son well when he's "in country". You're a good Dad too, don't ever forget that. He sure won't!

Strangely, in my area we almost have too many of both. One of the oldest and best known drag strips in the eastern edge of the midwest, Quaker City Raceway in Salem, Oh barely escaped the developer's grader though it's former owner sold off all of the surrounding land late this spring. The 'strip and state of the art facilities got new owners, but it's long term fate is none too certain. Anybody was anybody in the '60s and '70s ran at Quaker...Garlits, Kalitta, Muldowney, Chris the Greek, Nicholson, Schartman, Landy, Dave Strickler, Bill Jenkins, Stone, Woods and Cook, Ohio George, Jungle Jim, and more top racers that I could possibly think of ran there. In fact, there first time I ever went to the strip was to watch the Little Red Wagon drag it's tailgate down Quaker City's quarter mile... Dragway 42, Thompson...home of the Gasser Reunion, Norwalk, and several others are less than a couple of hours away.
I'd have to actually sit and count the number of dirt and asphalt circle tracks within 100 miles of my home. There are many more ovals than drag strips. It sounds like we have an embarassment of riches with so many tracks, but most run the same classes, race on Friday or Saturday night and with an uncertain economy....we build REAL AMERICAN cars here, having so many tracks vying for the same cars and fans has become a real problem.
But yeah, Kalifornia may be thought of as Hot Rod Country, but the midwest, east and south is where the real racing happens!
