Interesting! When Ford bought Ghia they went all Italian for a while. There was even a Mustang "Milano" show car. The code name for the Mustang project was "Allegro" and there was a styling study that had Falcon like back end with a severe fastback roof and a front end that had a grille that looked a lot like a 67/68 Mustang.

Re: obscure muscle
Here is an obscure car, the 69-70 Marauder X-100. Awesome car. Great looks and fairly quick for a tank.

...don't forget the AMX! The early model, without a back seat- basically it was a shortened Javelin. You could get them with the "big" V-8; much like the FE engine family, they all looked the same from the outside, from the 290, 343, 390, 401.
There was this kid, I knew - back in the day - his dad owned the AMC dealership. He got an AMX as a senior present, Black on Black, it has this huge embroidered 'bird thing in place of a back seat - mucho cool! - 390, 4-speed, drag pack (yes, AMC had a drag pack too)... all the bells and whistles. He also got most of the factory race parts. What with it being a two seater, short wheel base and lighter than the SC rambler, there wasn't much more any high school kid could ask for.
The only "good" thing that happened ... he wrapped it around a telephone pole about 3 months later. I know I sound like some kind of ghoul, for wishing bad things to happen to a fellow ‘rodder - but that was back then ...besides, you only had to meet the guy once to know why I was not the only one that was chuckling once the news (HS grapevine works fast) reports came in about his unfortunate collision. He came out OK, just a broken leg, a few bruises and just a little humility.... . Once healed, his dad replaced the AMX with a 4-door, I think it was called a Diplomat or something like that. Karma works!
It was a great car... but like anything worth having, it only lasted a couple of years - seems it was too expensive to cut the back seat out. After the first few models, they just moved the name over to the regular Javelin, took most of the power away - funny how they emasculated the car before finally sending off to an ignoble death.

Re: obscure muscle
My first car was an 67 F85 Olds that my father ordered to pull a camper in the mountains with. It had a 330 cu in engine with 320 horsepower and 3.55 geared positraction rear end. In the late 60's and early 70's. I enjoyed beating road runners, mustangs, chevy's, cuda's with it. A true sleeper!

Here's a site with a bunch of info that Holly Clark and others have put together birth of the Mustang if you haven't seen it. I hadn't looked around the new site too much. Haven't heard from Holly in a while now though so she must be staying busy. But thinking she was having health issues also. I will have to email her.
Phil Clark
The main site has a lot of different info.

As for obscure, where'd all the EXPs go? Talking about a 2 seater AMX made me think of the EXP which is no comparison otherwise but I never saw many of them.

That was Charlie Sheen's car in "The Wraith". Yuch Dodge!!!

A classic movie, no doubt. I would add the 1977-79 Trans Am W72 6.6, underquoted on power, it actually had 260-290 net HP! The engine was also used in the 1977 Can Am.
