Re: Your first car

Guess I'm a young fart here... hehe..

I bought a 1979 Mustang in 1991 for $1,200.. 4 cylinder car, no air, red with red vinyl interior.

Wound up building a 302 for it along with a C4. Still the car had no air, and I think I drove it for 3 years with a blown head gasket as it would never hold the coolant. I also effectively killed the rare 6.75" rear end that came in the early 79 cars.

I got rid of it and bought an 88GT T-5, kept it about 10 years then got stupid and bought a Honda accord....

....several cars later I bought an 86 GT last year and just got it going again with a fresh 306.

Re: Your first car

It was 1997 and I traded an older fella out of his 1969 Ford Fairlane 500.
It's a 4 door with bench seats front and back.
I still have it, though it needs a lot of attention.

1950 Pontiac "Chieftain" with an inline 8 cylinder slug!!

The car was a tank but gas was only 19.9 cents a gallon with an occasional 16.9 cents......life was good AND believe it or not current gas prices are still in line adjusted for inflation!!

That's a dubious statement, today's wages have not kept pace with inflation. So it doesn't matter if a given product is still "in line" adjusted for inflation. It's a dirty trick pulled by the Upper class. If you make a higher income then products are inflation adjusted "affordable", but if you make a working class income your buying power has actually been reduced over the last 25 years - because your wages have not kept up with inflation.

They are in effect creating two Americas.

Re: Your first car

1980

Got a piss yellow with a baby Sh*t green interior 68 Stang with a 289 2V and c4. It acted like it wanted to change lanes all on its own on the way home....Got it home and found out all the lug nuts were loose. Learned body and engine work on that car. She ended up black on black and carried me through High School and my first year in the Military.

As far as the so called adjusted for inflation gas prices Cobra Jack....sorry... I dont mean to insult and please dont take it that way but you have bought into the oil industry's line of fertilizer. Gas prices have almost quadrupled in the last 4 years, and the oil industry is making record breaking profits...PERIOD. if the gas prices had kept up with inflation since gas was a quarter a gallon that would be one thing...... to have it go from less than a dollar to almost $4 in 4 years is nothing but rape of the American public, and it is taking a healthy role in the destruction of our current economy......just as OPEC planned.

Hey Keith,

I don't like gas prices any more than you do but having been in the chemical "bidness" my entire life gasoline at $4.00 a gallon (about $.60 a pound) is still one of the cheapest "chemicals" on earth!! Granted the recent "quadrupling" of prices is irritating and causing everyone to re-think their finances, but with over 50 years of inflation $4.00 a gallon ain't far off......the BIG question is......where will the price stabilize and fall back some??

BTW, I used to drive 60K miles a year and burn 4000-5000 gallons of gas per year.....NO MORE!! Today that would represent almost double my mortgage payment monthly!!

At least we can get gas today.....back in the 70's I had to make appointments along my sales route to put 5 gallons in my Delta 88 with a 455 ci motor......11 MPG.....NOT FUN!!!

What really worries me is not crude oil supply but refinery capacity and age.....If one goes down we REALLY HAVE PROBLEMS!!!

Sorry to derail this thread about first cars guys!!

Carry on.....
