Even Dumber(?).... after putting an engine together; dropping it in the compartment, I set valves, set initial timing, put on valve covers, checked all the wiring - time to fire it up.
A last check for every little thing, rest a moment then checked everything "one more time". Pulled the dip stick - it was completely dry. Good thing I caught it. So, I pour in 5 quarts of 30 weight break-in Dino oil and pull the dip stick to see if I need to "top it off". Damn, still dry as a bone...I remember I installed a deep sump pan, so that's not too surprizing. As I go to get a couple more quarts ... I slip in a fast spreading puddle of oil rapidly draining out of the oil pan plug.
I forgot to put the plug in.... just call me Einstein the clown. That has to rate pretty high on the "DUH" scale.
Even worse... as I was cleaning up the mess, I found the breakover bar and socket was still on the crank snout, where I was turning the engine over by hand to set the valves. It took me 2 more days to go over everything before I was confident enough to actually fire it up for real.
There is some truth in the old saying that drunks, babies and fools need to be protected from themselves.
