There are more trucking, steel, electronics and building companies here than you can shake a stick at. In most cases, if you cant see something someone else can, you are either blind or not looking.
I was just reading that some of the rural mid states like Iowa, Nebraska, and Oklahoma, have more good jobs than people to fill them. I was surprised. But it's good to hear they're getting a good turn.

Re: "conspiracy therory"

Job 1. I knew you were predujiced after the first sentence. Reminds me of our teachers union telling us how we need to double the teacher's salaries so they provide a better education to our kids. Bull***t!! Big oil isn't lucky. They are just greedy. Remember that we have degenerated to greed, profit and power motivated society, period! But business has to have a concious and realize what their exorbatent prices are doing to this country. And people wonder why the government needs to step in and pass regulations. They need to do that because businesss like big oil are just plain ripping people off!

But here's a shocker. Last night on Marketplace, they interviewed a gentleman who was commenting on how the speculative bidding is what really has us paying close to $4.00 gallon for gas (I tanked up yesterday for $3.91, full serve, credit). It seems that about nine years ago, this speculative bidding was regulated. Enron got that regulation removed. Now they can bid whatever they feel is right. They are trying to get this regulation back in place.

Later!

Well I hope that we can respectfully disagree.

Having said that - how much profit is too much? and who decides? These companies aren't charities or non-profits. Furthermore... MR. CEO can be sued for deliberately not maximizing share holder value. Millions of people have their retirement riding on the success of "big oil" - likely the same folks complaining about greed! It's not greed - it is business. I have been told countless times growing up and I am sure everyone here has heard the same thing - life isn't fair - isn't ever going to be.

Don't think i am in the tank for big business - I am PO'd about the mess too. but who is really at fault - Joe America...a companies entire reason for being is to give us what we want/ask for....we want cheap stuff - they make it elsewhere - because we don't care that it came from (insert country) - or they would make it here! It's OUR greed that is getting us - not big biz - they just facilitate our greed.

However, you do make an important point - having a conscious - the second Mr. & Mrs. America start making conscious based decisions - biz will be right there to facilitate that too...I am sure we can both agree on that? The improvements we need start with the guy in the mirror.

Re: "conspiracy therory"

Our president has been on tv all day trying to get congress to open up restricted oil properties for offshore drilling saying it would bring down the consumers cost for gasoline. He isn't telling you that if we drill more wells we are forced by free trade agreements to sell more of our oil overseas. I can't believe he is so smug to think we are that blind & stupid. We are already selling too much of our oil overseas and this bozo is hoping to sell more & cover it up with a lame excuse of reducing the price of gas.

Re: "conspiracy therory"

No cares that China is drilling in the Gulf of Mexico and we can't? do you think they are going to be "stewards of the environment"?

Just because we are not drilling in the Gulf doesn't mean no one else is...at some point we have make the call - us or them? who gets the oil? food vs. fuel - drive or eat? Oil may not be the long term solution - but its the ONLY short term one.

I filled up last night $4.26 for the cheap stuff and just a few days ago it was $4.19. I kicked myself for not filling up then!

Re: "conspiracy therory"

Some interesting facts I didn't know. One 42 gallon barrel of crude oil will refine out to 19.5 Gallons of gasoline or 9 gallons of diesel or 4 gallons of jet fuel.

Also some profit margins of different companies. Citigroup Bank 33%, Exxon-Mobile 11% & Walmart 4%.

And last but not least, where do we import our crude oil from ?

Canada 18%
Mexico 15%
Saudi Arabia 12%
Nigeria 12%
Venezuela 10%
Angola 6%
Iraq 5%
Algeria 3%
UK 2%
Kuwait 2%
Norway 1%
Guinea 1%

PS. We also import pure refined gasoline ready to use because our refineries cannot refine enough to keep us running.

That's "and" not "or". Diesel, gasoline and jet fuel are all produced at different stages of the refining process.

Here in Canada We feel the same crunch we are paying 1.50/L with works out to be just over 5 gallon.. we have the same problem.. we are sitting on a gold mine of oil but it all gets exported .. its the same not matter where you go
