Re: Underide Bars saved me from Diaster!!!

The bottom line is check nd recheck your work. A little Quality Contol goes a long way to preventing more damage and someone getting hurt. Any job worth doin is worth doing right. And don't forget to use the proper tool. Less broken parts and skinned nuckles.

Lost wheel stories. In the north country we often take on more projects than we can finish in one winter. OK I do any way. I replaced all the seals in the rear end about December. I put the wheels on torqued with my fingers I would guess. I took it out about April to check all the improvements I made. I was on back roads and it was running good. Well I better make a little freeway run on the way home right? Oh I ran it up and backed down only to see a state trooper with a car pulled over. I was glad I slowed from 80 only to feel a vibration. The freeway split about the time I felt the car drop and saw sparks in the side mirror. There was actually a safe place to stop where the road split. I got out and saw the drum on the ground and was in a panic looking for the tire. It was an aluminum wheel and a performance tire but I was worried about it rolling down the freeway and causing a wreck.Well no point fretting about that because now the trooper is behind me with the lights on. She says something about me having a flat. I said yes and guess what? I didn't have my keys or billfold. All I had was the ignition key and no drivers licence. I just walked up to her, it was getting dark and I was getting worried. Asked if she could call my house. No but she would ask the dispatcher. They did call and someone came with keys. In the mean time I look and there is my tire jammed up into the fender. Now I have keys and a jack but the tire is stuck. I had to let air out of if so I could pull it out. I grabbed the spare and took one lug off each wheel to get home. The lip on the quarter panel trimmed the edge off that tire but it did not look damaged. I am actually still using that tire years latter ands I torque those wheel every time I look at them!

Re: Underide Bars saved me from Diaster!!!

Damn! Some smart arse already beat me to it....

Loose Wheel

On a road in Toledo, across from the depot
I was cruising in my old heap.
It wasn't good lookin'
But I was sure bookin'
And anyway I got it dirt cheap.
Me and my old lady
Were cruising 'bout 80
When the car really started to roar
Round the curve we were turnin', and something was burnin'
But I shoved that old gas pedal down to the floor

In the mirror I saw something cruise down the highway
I thought how it looked out of place
It was my tire, going like fire
I had a strange look on my face
I really don't know but, it looked like a donut
For a minute I thought I was dead
I started crying, I thought we were dying
I looked out the windshield and said

You picked a fine time to leave me, loose wheel
With four old bald tires, you were such a good deal
I've had some clunkers, some really bad junkers
But you were just a great steal
You picked a fine time to leave me, loose wheel

After the collision, I made a decision
I thought how I'd lived through it all
In the glow of the headlights, I checked out the damage
You really couldn't see much at all
I started thinking, I'm glad I'm not drinking
And these words came back time after time

You picked a fine time to leave me, loose wheel
With 4 old bald tires, you were such a good deal
I've had some clunkers, some really bad junkers
But you were just a great steal
You picked a fine time to leave me, loose wheel

ga289stocker, I cant imagine that any insurance company would cover damages because the owner forgot to tighten the lug nuts. Do they know what happened?

Yep, you'd be suprised what all is covered by your auto insurance policy. Thing is most people never read them and only relay on what someone else has told them about what happened to them. I told them what happened and am looking at a $50 comprehensive deductible.

Very true about some of the things they cover.

My old girlfriend's teenage daughter somehow(?) slammed a car door on her head and needed medical attention. The doctor's bills were forwarded to the auto insurance company and they paid the bill.

Re: Underide Bars saved me from Diaster!!!

A few years back my wife was driving down the four lanes when out of no where came a tire, wheel and axle out of a Chevy Capri. It stopped long enough to smash in her hood, break out her windshield and dent the roof before it made it's merry way down the road behind her. The only hurt she felt was that her new car was all smashed up. She was very fortunate not to get hurt, but unlucky to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The obvious question is what color was her hair?
