Letting Other People Drive Your Car

I told my sons a thousand times to not let friends drive their cars. This morning at two AM a nineteen year old kid that works at the local NAPA store was killed in a auto accident. His friend was driving him around in his car, lost control & hit a tree at high speed. He was a good kid. He should have left his friend in the passenger seat.

Re: Letting Other People Drive Your Car

BS--he got killed because of excessive speed--

cal -it has nothing to do with a friend driveing your car-its the showing off and doing stupid things that cleans the gene pool

speed kills when you do it on the street

You can agree all you like, but I'll not let anyone drive my car. They're not use to it, have no idea how it handles or how much power it has.

That's how I feel. Newer cars are more forgiving, but I would never trust anyone else driving my car unless they know how it stops, accelerates, and handles. The only time anyone else has driven my car is when my girlfriend and I went to the lake to film some stuff and I had to get a picture of her driving it. I'm just happy the roads were empty.... :-)

I would really think twice before letting anyone try my wheels, especially the old ones. On a second thought, no I won't let anyone but a buyer try them...

I don't think even my husband has driven the shotrod over 55mph the few times he used it. Going the 10 miles to work there was one little section that is 55mph. He doesn't like driving it and I don't like him driving it so it works out good.

Re: Letting Other People Drive Your Car

My condolences to the friends and family. That's a tough thing to endure.

Was this a hotrod, ricer, family truckster? I need more details in order to form an opinion, but...

Does no one thinks that the fact this kid was 19 had any factor in this? How old was the buddy that was driving? On the face of it, this just smacks of another example of young males thinking they're going to live forever, and can do anything an old fart can do, but better. Don't ruffle your feathers yet, I used to be the same way. I was just luckier than this poor kid, and a lot of others.

At my age I have had a fair amount of experience driving cars. Won't say I'm an expert in all aspects, but I do pretty Ok. I drive other peoples cars all the time. Haven't wadded one up yet, don't think I ever will.

FM member Flat32 tossed me the keys to his Deuce the first day we met, after only chatting for an hour or so. He let my wife drive it shortly after that. I offered to let him make a pass or two in the Falcon as reciprication but he declined and I didn't press it.

My nephew let me take his car down the track a couple years back. He was running it in the 10.50 - 10.60 range, I ran a 10.90, short shifting and letting off before the stripe. 1st time I had driven the car since it was a street rod 15 years earlier.

Point I'm trying to make is that I have no problem with an experienced driver taking my car out for a spin. I believe in this instance that poor judgement and a bad decision coupled with lack of experience led to a tragic disaster.

Who's fault is it? The drivers fault, pure and simple. Did the owner of the car make a bad choice in letting the friend drive? You bet he did. But the kid driving made an even worse decision and it unfortunately took one life and forever changed many more.

Anyway, that's my opinion. And I truly do feel for the friends and family.

Thanks for caring. He was a polite kid, hard to find these days. Didn't smoke or drink. Never got a ticket for anything. He bought a late model Highway Patrol Camaro last year from the state sale. Detailed it and sprayed on a new coat of paint. I never saw him driving it hard. The friend he let drive it I know little about. As the old saying goes. Sometimes the good die young.
