Re: Math Question, Genius needed!

My son installed floors pans in a 69 Malibu and used about 7 lbs. That includes patching body mount holes and new floor supports. Figure we will need 3 or 4 more to finish trunk pan. We had to make patches for the inner wheel houses. Car needed frame off but customer cant afford that.

Re: Math Question, Genius needed!

DAMN! You guy';s can't weld for crap can you?

I am on my second 2 lb roll this year, and I did all the welding on that 57 TR3 floor pans, quarter panels, fenders Etc, AND some car's in between and still on the second roll...

I just figured that since I weld FAT that someone else would use less than I on a norm.

This is turning out to be a tragic event. and The injured party is being treated like he lives in a communist bloc country and not where justice, honor and self respect should rule!

I am so pissed right now you can't imagine.

No my dear I am not being treated unfairly... Someone else is, and the way the management is treating him is shameful!

That post and all related posts are no longer allowed here on Ford Muscle because some people are afraid of controversy..... And Others are afraid of good honest truths!

You are using wire at a rate that I would consider normal. I built 2 class 9 offroad buggies (dirt sand rails) from scratch and didn't finish a 2 lb spool. That included welding all the cage together, boxing in the trailing arms, gusseting everything and all the mounting tabs for the body, seats and dash.

From your earlier question, 17 rolls of 2lb wire is 10,370 feet of wire (124,440 inches). Not sure what you mean by "how much welding" has to be done to use up 17 rolls of wire. If you mean how much wire then I just answered that and if you mean how much time then it would depend on the wire speed that the welder is set to. You can divide the numbers that I gave above by the wire speed and figure out how much time it took to burn through the wire.

Can you please give us people who are not "in the know" more info on what this is all about? You really have me curious at this point.

Re: Math Question, Genius needed!

It's about some idiot charging my friend for 2 MILES of Mig Welding wire to weld in some floor pan's and frame braces and whatnot on a 66 mustang.
Then 2 gallons of Bondo after that, which is supremely dishonest on a car with all new sheet metal....

volume of a cylinder is pi r squared times height

so times 12= .0115428 cubic inches per foot

times .283 pounds per cubic inch for steel= .00326 pounds per foot

2 pounds divided by .00326 = 613.496 feet

guessing same as RNRs post except for rounding/decimal places/hes probably got a easier way, I was just bored wanted to see if I could remember how
There is a problem with using .283 lbs per cubic inch. "flux core" mig wire is hollow, not solid in other words, so the volume is less than .0115428 per foot. We would need to know the wall thickness of the wire or the inside diameter.

Ahh, I see now. Thanks for clearing that up for me. What idiots!! They would need 2 gallons of bondo to cover up all the very crappy welds if they used two miles of wire just to swap out floorpans and other small things. Obviously they didn't have a clue or they are trying to overcharge your friend. You are correct though, either way is being disshonest.

MCCUTCHEON4- I realize that flux core isn't solid, but it isn't hollow either. The center is where the flux is and since I don't know how much the flux actually weighs I just calculated it as if it were solid. With the weight difference being so little, I bet that I am within 50 feet or so on my calculation.

Re: Math Question, Genius needed!

Funny how some try to take advantage of others that are unknowing. I don't know a thing about mig welders but would at least know when an amount sounded astronomical! At least I hope i would!
