Math Question, Genius needed!

OK folks, 2 lb spool of .035 diameter flux core Mig Welding wire contains how many feet in length?

Anyone of you math geniuses have those numbers handy?

It's a project of mine and my mig wire comes in 2 lb rolls because I use and older smaller mig.

Re: Math Question, Genius needed!

Well if my math is correct, I would say around 610 feet of wire to a 2lb spool. I just used the numbers for solid .035 round steel rod and calculated that. One foot weighs .0032743 lbs. Not sure how much difference the flux core would be, but this should get you in the ballpark.

Re: Math Question, Genius needed!

no genius here to say the least, but like little math problems sometimes...just thought I'd run over 'how to' do this...

area of circle is pi r squared - so half .035 times itself, times JCs 3.14159=.0009619 square inches

volume of a cylinder is pi r squared times height

so times 12= .0115428 cubic inches per foot

times .283 pounds per cubic inch for steel= .00326 pounds per foot

2 pounds divided by .00326 = 613.496 feet

guessing same as RNRs post except for rounding/decimal places/hes probably got a easier way, I was just bored wanted to see if I could remember how

Re: Math Question, Genius needed!

Remember that the weight of the spool itself needs to be removed from the total weght before dividing.

So you'd have:

(total weight - spool weight)/(weight per foot) = total feet

You'll need to adjust for local gravity too. Do you what it is where your at?

Like r.n.r.racing said, it may not matter much because of the density difference between steel and flux could throw these numbers of quite a few PPM.

Re: Math Question, Genius needed!

So, a safe margin is 610 feet per roll that would make 8.65 Rolls to make one Linear Mile is that correct?

Meaning that 2 linear miles of Wire for a Mig welder is akin to SEVENTEEN, 2 lb. rolls of wire, yes?

OK genius people. Welders alike.

How Much Welding has to be Done in order to use up SEVENTEEN ROLLS of 2 lb wire?

I'm talking even BAD welding....

But seriously I'm needing a good estimate as it's for a good cause in the long run. Keeping people from getting screwed by Hacks and thieves.
