Porting Tools

Hi all,
Been posting on Torino Cobra forum and have just suscribed to Ford Muscle, I have learned so much I've had to start printing my e-mails and forums and cataloging them for future reference! Thanks to everyone..

New question.. What kind of tools is everyone been using to port? I'm getting ready to buy a die grinder to port my 351c heads and want to get a good one! I hate buying something and it not be good enough to do what I want it to.
Thanks,
JoeGT

Hey there, I port heads on pretty much a daily basis between valve jobs, boring and honing blocks etc. and my preference for a grinder is the Milwaukee 5192 for about $250 or so if you are on a budget and don't want to spend a ton of $$$. There is the more powerful Milwaukee grinder but it is about $100 more and weighs a bit more - believe me your arms will ache after a while. I get all my other supplies from Cylinder Head Abraisives out of Sacramento, CA 800-456-5474. A double cut oval shape burr like #SE5 does a great job of removing tons of metal fast. A single cut SE4 is good for smaller radii like around valve guides and the single cut leaves fewer 'scars'. I use the Pink stones PS186X for cleaning up the port of grinder marks then finish with a 60 grit cartridge roll on the intake and an 80 grit on exhaust. Not giving away my secrets for making aluminum heads look so good though...

Those would be what I consider the minimum essentioals for a starting porter. Of course my first set of heads was done with a Dremel, ugh. Not recommended as it takes about five times longer.

Tip on the grinder - cast iron doesn't cut well with the grinder moving 18,000rpm so I built a variable speed switch using a HD dimmer switch from Home Depot wired to it's own outlet and I can change speeds depending on what metal and burr I am using.

Hi,
Heres another idea for you, I have used this model of Dumore forever. I use carbide
burrs and pink stones with sandpaper rolls
to finish,

Here's a link on some interesting porting stuff:

This site has some crazy stuff on it. Lot's of heavy information in those articles. It would be interesting to experiment with some of those theories.

Read the posts below concerning 'Porting Safety' and 'Die Grinders'.

There is a lot of good info below to read through.

Good Luck!
