Scaling and big chunks of rusted metal in 289

I have a rebuilt 289 engine 0.060 over stock bore, it worked well for about 10 months after being rebuilt, then on the very first cold day of this winter it began to overheat. It's taken me a bit of time and a money to figure out what the real problem was. This engine has a LOT of RUST and lots of scaling comming from the water passages on the block and perhapps the cylinder heads, big chunks of rusting metal that accumulate on the upper tank of the radiator.

To try to solve this problem I have back-flushed the engine 4 times this month, and A LOT of rust and small pieces of rusted metal came out. Today also installed a bigger 4-ROW HI-FLO radiator and a GANO rad-filter. Well the engine is running very cool now at 160 degrees but...

I know the overheating and clogging of the radiator will soon come back to hunt me again. Perhapps within 3 to 6 months I will have to have the radiator rodded-out again!
in the meantime I will clean of the filter once a week and flush the engine once a month.

What I want to ask ALL OF YOU is: Is there a way to CLEAN OFF, remove for good most if not all of the rust and scaling from the water passages in the block itself and the cylinder heads?

Can a mandrel too with the flexible shaft be used to sucessfully remove all or most of this rust and scaling?

Does anybody know of a better way?

Thank you very much

Scaling and big chunks of rusted metal in 289

Hello everybody!

I think I found a cure for the engine block and cylinder head rust and scaling problem. Last night I stayed up very late looking for a solution and I may have found one!

I found two products on the web I will provide the links here so everybody will have access to them.

There are as follows:
EvapoRust. Industrial strenght Rust remover

http://www.orisonmarketing.com/corro...vapo-rust.html

I order one gallon of this stuff and I will be using it next week. I spoke to a fellow there in texas (Robin) and according to him this stuff CAN be used by adding it 50/50 to the cooling system and running the car for about 30 minutes. It will disolve the rust and scale. This product EvapoRust is available through your local SNAP-ON tools distributor the SnapOn part number is: ORIER4D5 or their WebSite.

and

MiraClean 250 Rust and Scale remover
http://www.miraclean.cc/MiraClean250.htm
http://www.76lubricants.com/techdata...aclean_250.pdf

Also MiraChem 250 http://www.mirachem.com/250.htm

I bought 5 gallons of this stuff today feb 13,2004
but after talking to the manufactorer in AZ I was instructed to return it to the seller and get my money back because the manufactorer could not recommend that I use the product inside the cooling system with the car running because they had never use it that way in a 66 mustang and where not sure what could be affected besides the rust.

This product WILL (he said) remove ALL rust and scale from the engine block and cylinder heads in about two hours BUT the block or heads have to be INMERSED IN it, in other words the block or heads must be out of the car, taken apart and inmersed in this solution. You have to find yourself your local distributor for this product.

Anyway good luck everyone

Evapo-Rust.

I saw this thread and thought that I would add that I found the Evapo-Rust product in a saturated wipe form at www.ALLINTERNETSALES.COM . They sell these in 20 and 100 counts canisters and using the 20 count, I had success in removing flash rust from my bumper and some heavier rust from a door track.
