Ported Original vs Aluminum

I have a 289 that has the original heads. They have been rough ported, but no valve work done. I'm thinking of going to Aluminum (maybe AFR 165) in the future. What type of difference would I notice. Will the noticable difference be worth the expense?

From what I've seen and read - yes. You'll never get the old 289's to run like an AFR.

I have stock 66 289 heads w/ roller rockers, I looked at
the AFR 165's , I think w/ 1.90/1.60 values, in terms of just
out the box heads, how many hp gain could you expect?

Quite a bit. Add a cam at the same time and the mtor will be completely different. With both you will get at leased 50 hp over stock maiby more.
