68 302 heads into my 71Pinto

Hello, just wanted to show anyone whos interested, my ported heads. I remember reading the tech article on how to port your own heads here a long while ago and I decided 'Why not". I ended up porting 95% of the exhaust by myself and when it came time to do the intakes i chickend out.
I happen to luckily know the owner of WEST COAST CYLINDER HEADS in reseda calif and hes been porting since the begining of time (LOL) . So i asked him to show me the ins and outs of porting the intakes . He let me use his tools , his bench, and his experiance to finish porting my heads. Took me 4 saturdays and gave me a sore back and black iron from head to toe to get r done .
His experiance on how to hold the grinder and what to look for was indespensible. I thought they turned out purtty good.
dont know what they flow (I didnt want to ask for him to flow them for free ,he thought it would be a waste of money for a street engine anyways) but its got to be better than stock.
Anyways sorry for the 'run on'
Thanks for listening!

2,electric or air die grinder?

3,Carbide bit or stones?

4,Did you cut seats before or after port job?

Top job, sounds like a nice guy to help you out so much

Hey there, thanks!
Yes they were my first .
I have 1.94 1.5 chevy valves .100 longer . They are manely extreem duty. Way overkill for my application, but I wanted USA valves and they were on ebay for $135 for the 16 valves NEW- shipped. So I said "what the hay"
I used 2 different carbide cutters for the exhuast. One 3/8" ball double cut, and a 3/8 flame double cut. 6 inch shank but cut down to about 3 to 4 inches.
Then next with the sanding rolls 120 grit. And then emery cloth wrapped around a slotted mandrel 180 grit.
On the intake side i cant remember the cutter i used to rough the bowls . It looked like a flame point and i think it was about 1/2" single cut
I can tell you that you always try to do the valve job After the port work. As I was told by the owner a good valve job can "make or brake" good port work. I couldnt tell you what angles he used but he was happy about what he was seeing in the outcome of the valve job.
If you look closely i could have finished blending the intake valve cut but that would have ment that id have needed another weekend and i was tired of making the 25 mile trip to his shop every weekend morning.
If anyone is in the area id definatly recommend his shop.
When I get ( save up) for my aluminum heads Im going to have him set them up for me as well.
Thanks guys.
Robert

In the last pic, it looks like you cut the roof flush around the valvestem.
Is that a good idea? Will there be any problems with excessive wear?

well "Someone said it be ok" LOL
Seriously though, the article here on fordmuscle shows them doing it with advice from the experts, and my "Head guy" didnt say anything about it.
The iron heads have more stability than do aluminum heads in the valve guide area. So id say not a good idea on aluminum.
Also if you run roller-tip rockers as I am you already are cutting the "scrubbing" down tremendously on the valve vs. stock rockers.
Really though the proof is in the pudding as "they" say so ill see if i have issues down the road.

Hey, 71!
Looking good! That should provide your Pinto with sufficient motivation! Did you install hardened valve seats for the exhausts?

Hi , thanks alot. i put a lot of work in those heads and i probably couldve bought a set of ford motorsports M-6049-Y303 aluminums for about 850 and had better heads. BUT Oh well. One reason I didnt was cause the chamber volume was 58cc on these iron heads and the y303 heads are 64cc. I will be saving up for some afr 165s after i paint the car.
ANYWAYS, to actually answer your question, yes i made sure that i had some installed. I learned the hard way with the original 2.0 4cly that soft seats wear like mad when used with unleaded fuel.

Good Job! Those look great and are bound to improve power. You did a top-notch job with 'em.
Now you can speak knowingly when you talk about how much work goes into porting a set of heads.I know what you mean about the iron dust....I sneeze it for a week after porting. It even gets by the dust mask I try to wear.
Btw,your man with the shop is a great guy and a credit to the profession for teaching you like that.
