How much $$$ for a professional porting job?

The last set of Aussie heads I did, cost the customer $850.
That was porting, seat cuts (5 angles on intake-radius exhaust seat), new guides, cutting the spring pads for Comp Beehive springs, and a surface cut. Those heads flowed really well and we used stock size valves. The springs and valves were around 480.
I dont do just porting, cause if the guides are worn, then the valves wont seat like they should, and without doing the seat cuts, you cant get good flow from the port, infact the seat is KEY to getting good flow and power from a head.

No, re-read it...850 + 480=1330. Engine output increased by about 60HP at the flywheel!
This is a good quality street/strip type port job. My racing stuff starts at 1500 just for the porting. There is CONSIDERABLE time in porting, flowing, trying different things, and doing the valve job can take 4 hours!

Many people do not realize what a "Professional" porting job means or entails. If you want "Lenny" with his rat tail file and Dremel to go at it.....then a couple of c-notes might get you by.

Time, experience and results separate the pro from the wannabe.

Look at TEA or Fox Valley and see what they charge for their port work.

$850 is not unreasonable for results....that means before and after flow numbers along with a dyno.

And 60 hp ain't sumthin to sneeze at.

If you want to run with the big dogs it costs.....

Ant BTW, that was 4 hours for the valve job.

Thanks Joe...
You guys need to slow down your reading...it was 4 hours for the valve job. It's not always 4 hours, but in some cases it can take close to it.
I agree when you are paying for porting, you want results, not pretty ports. No matter what you pay, you should get results...and your porter should KNOW as much as he can about your entire combo, not just what lift the cam has.
Good porting will have alot more to do with cross section and air speed than raw flow numbers...but flow numbers sell.
With the advent websites and such, it can be difficult to weed through the bull.

Brian, Have you ever done any porting on the A3 Ford Motorsport head? If so what kind of numbers did you come up with? Thanks
