Valve Guide Removal? Necessary?

I've noticed that most of the porting pictures show the heads without the valve guides installed. Is this absolutely required? I have a pair that I bought that has new valve guides installed. They are 351W heads and I've done a good bit of work so far with the valve guides in the head. Any suggestions on how to proceed? If I do need to remove them, what's the best way about going about it and can it be done without damaging the valve guides I have now?

It will be very difficult to port those heads without removing the guides unless you want to make them flush with the port. A machine shop should be able to press them out for you for little money...only thing I don't know is if they can be re-used once pressed out.

My first go around with the DOOEs that I ported were done with the old guides and the new guides were then put in and were trimmed down to be flush with the port. When I wiped a few bearings and had to rebuild last year, I found several guides that had .005 or .006 clearance...they had really worn in only 3500 miles. The shop that re-did my heads said the guides were too short so now I have about 3/16" of the guide protruding out into the port with beveled ends. Some would say I need even more guide length than that. One consolation is that my 26986 beehives have less spring pressure than the old 972s so the force on the guides will be a tad less. Of course rocker geometry plays a big role in all this too.

Are you asking if you should port the heads and then install the guides, or completely remove the guide boss to help flow?

Valve Guide Removal? Necessary?

I'm asking if it is necessary to have the valve guides removed to achieve a good port job? Or, would it be fine for me to continue porting the heads with the valve guides installed and still achieve good results?

It's NOT totally necesasry to remove the guides for a good port job.

You SHOULDN'T re-use the guides once taken out. and we don't Press them out. We Hammer them out. You would snap the head in two before pressing a guide out with direct constant pressure.
