My first home porting experiance

Please excuse the misspelling in the heading. Here are some pics of my first porting job on my E7's. Tell me what you think.

Re: My first home porting experiance

What are the inside dimensions of the exhaust ports? Did you use a gasket?
That looks a lot like what I'm doing, enlarging the ports to their maximum size, opening up the intakes and eliminating the pushrod pinch.

Work on the short turns and the bowls, then remove the bumps.

Re: My first home porting experiance

If you do the layout work with a gasket in place and then pay very close attention to the straight lines you will not have the bumpy sides. On the exhaust ports you want to work on the floor of the port to smooth the flow in a gently increasing radius from the valve to the port. Taking the AIR bump out and flush it to the roof of the port. Pay close attention to the valve guide making it foil shaped and direct the flow from the pocket to the center of the port. Careful consideration is also given to the area under the valve to increase the flow across the seat and into the port. The best home porting jobs are just grinding the ports out to match the gasket and then blending that size into the port about 3/4". Doing that and flushing the AIR bump will do 90% of what you get from a professional job. Keep up the practice to get your straight lines straight and the curves blended smoothly. Your exhaust port should end up about 1 1/8" wide and 1 7/16" tall. They flow pretty good at that size and if the gaskets are aligned with the ports they flow smoothly into the headers.

Re: My first home porting experiance

Looks like you have removed all of the valve guide boss from the port. While this will give you better flow the guides will wear way faster (and valves too). As said above the guide bosses should be foil shaped or tear dropped.

I used Fel Pro #1415, like Strangeleek, I supose (1.48" x 1.25"). Is not good?

Is there risk of cracking heads?

Thank´s!

Re: My first home porting experiance

Try to remember this, THERE IS NO FLOW AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PORT, sooooo never cut any material or in general waste time reworking the floor of the port. PERIOD.

Re: My first home porting experiance

Big Joe:

The bottom is almost "untouched". A light shaved work.

The roof is huge ported, but in the last external 3/4" (near the thermactor channel)

The side walls are ported in the 3/4" toward gasket. I think there will be no crack at manifold thread bolt holes level, but I´m not sure about the rest of these port walls.

Thank´s for taking care.
