Porting AFR heads

Has anyone bought bare afr heads and ported them? I was thinking of buying bare heads and porting them. I'm sure someone will ask why not buy the assembled heads instead. Well, there is a post about the quality of parts used in the assembled heads. Any thoughts?

Re: Porting AFR heads

Do you meaN the raw castings that are NOT CNC ported? If so, that is NOT a good choice. As far as the quality of the valves and or springs, they offer 5 or 10 upgrade options. The 165 and 185 do not come with sevear duty valves standard, be you can upgrade them if you need to . the205 and 225 have very good race quality standard. That is the reason that the price jumps up between the 185 and the 205 heads. Most heads that are assembled for you by the seller use very cheap valves and springs so that they can list a low price to help sell them. AFR does NOT do it that way.

Thanks Joe. You answered my question. I will leave the porting to the pros.

Re: Porting AFR heads

I can understand why you would want to pick the parts that go into an after market set of heads but those ports have been designed to give you just exactly what you want. Any porting would no doubt upset the flow characteristics and leave you with garbage that you could have had by doing a poor porting job on stock heads. When you spend good money for after market heads buy the porting you want don't mess up the porting you buy.

If you don't want the parts, just buy the bare head fully CNC'ed. Although it really doesn't cost that much more to buy them with all the parts. Just ask about upgrades. If you get there catalog, look at the price sheet. That's were AFR puts all their upgrades. I have ported bare BBC heads for customers who wanted to save a few bucks, but I would always recommend getting the fully CNC'ed version and then polishing the ports from there if you want a finer finish.
