porting D80E head need advice

Does anyone know if the D80E sbf head from a 1983 Cougar respond the same to a home port job as good as the E7 heads did in the tech article ? These are stock heads (with stock valves). I am on a budget and this car will be a daily driver with a mild hydraulic flat tappet cam, dual plane intake, holley 570cfm and mustang shorty factory headers. Can I grind as much from the exhaust guide and emission hump as pictured in the article without hitting water? or otherwise trashing the castings? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Ron

Go to the junk yard and buy a peice-o-crap head.

Cost you $20.00 Then practice on it... it will save you a lot of troubles if this is your first porting job.

Re: porting D80E head need advice

Hi, I´m from Argentina. Please, excuse me for my poor English.

I´ve got a ´69 Mustang, 302. Originally equipped with rare low compression heads (C8OA-E), 63 cc combustion chamber volume.
The last year, one head was cracked and I thought in a new pair of aftermarket heads, but they were unaffordable to me.
I´ve got a pair of D8OE, from 1980 Ranger already ported by a local unexperted man.

I guess the exhaust ports are too big and not safe to use.

Please, I´d like your opinion about this.

Thank You, very much!

Re: porting D80E head need advice

from the investigating I have done so far, I think your heads will work as long as the exhaust port on your reworked heads is slightly smaller than the port on your headers.(from the pictures it appears that the ports were opened up some over the stock D80 port.)ps thanks for your input on the d80 heads, later Ronshine

Re: porting D80E head need advice

I´d like to know how is the risk of cracking the walls around the exhaust port caused by the normal pressure and temperature of gases with the already porting job.

The rest of the heads are at stock features, because I don´t want to continue porting intake side and changing valve sizes if the risk of crack is high.

Thanks, again!

First time / Amature porters, You don't want or have to to Hog everything out, just have the valve seats open up to the valve size you going to use and blend everything and match the gaskets and blend about 3/4-1" in.

You may consider shaping the guides some.

Unless you have experiance and / or a flow bench you can do more harm than good by just opening everything up too big........

Re: porting D80E head need advice

I agree with dfree383. Removing the hump helps and it looks good to open the ports at the gasket but leave it alone there. Smoothing it below the bowls helps. Look at some of the home porting info to get an idea. The idea of a junk head may also help you decide if you want to do it. I ported some E7's and could feel the difference and it was fun at the time and I learned a few things. One problem with the heads you have is huge combustion chambers. You should find E7's for $50 or less from the 5.0 guys and the smaller chamber and better flow will be worth it. I used both on the same engine so that would be my opinion.

I agree with you, but it´s very hard to get a pair of small block heads in my country.

What country are you located in?

Have you tried Ebay?

Your exhausts are a little over done, but should work, I'd be a little easier on the intakes and try not to Hog them out. Do a search on here their are several very good home porting posts and articals that are great for an entry level person looking to get some improvements.
