Port match TFS heads

Thinking about port matching my TFS heads. These are the exhaust gaskets I got with my FPA headers. This seems like an awful lot to take out to match the gasket. Any suggestions?

I doubt there is enough metal to open the port that much but since it is an exhaust port you can raise the roof a bit and widen it to better match the port but leave it a bit smaller. It won't hurt anything to have the port a little smaller than the header tube.

Thanks for the response Paul. I might try another gasket and see if it centers on the port better. But then again, these gaskets do fit the header perfect. I guess if they do fit the header I should stick with this pattern and do what you had said. I'll take it up some but not all the way.

Re: Port match TFS heads

I port matched the exhaust on one head this evening. I painted the gasket for an outline in red. Should I square the corners?

Nice work =D. If you were down here I'd sonic check the roof for you to see if you could take it out the rest of the way without getting too thin. I wouldn't square anything off either. Looks good as/is. If you REALLY wanted to do some work...you could make them look like this though:

=D

On a more serious note though lol...you might call Trickflow and ask them if there is enough meat in the roof for that final 1/8". If you left the port floor untouched, you could give them the total height from the port floor and they could give you an idea if you'd be safe. I'm thinking you would...but that's thinking!! Check with Trickflow and they might be able to set you straight!

Hey Cris,

Those heads are too big for your 289. You had better send them to me and I'll send you mine

Re: Port match TFS heads

Honestly i wouldnt have raised them, for a couple reasons.

the port actually works very well for its size to begin with and can go over 200cfm at stock size.and the cross section stays fairly close up to the header flange.

also idf this is going in a early model ford the headers usually leave a whole lot to be desired and probably pinch back down after the flange, which isnt what you want so soon after the valve.

but after sayin gall that i would be suprised if it actually hurt you,may not help at all though.....

Re: Port match TFS heads

I pulled my valves today and noticed one of the intake valves is bent. I guess that didn't show up on the vacuum test several weeks ago. These TFS heads have a lot of rough casting in the ports I want to clean up. It also looks as if there are other areas that can use cleaning up as well. I don't have my camera with me today but I will take some pics tomorrow. I would appreciate it if some of you could use paint or another program to maybe mark my pics up and help guide me in the right direction after I post the pics.

To find valves that are bent or not sealing, roll the head up and pour gasoline down the ports. If the valve isn't sealing, it will leak.

Typical vacuum testers don't work very well, as they hook to an air source that provides a CONSTANT source of air. The valves can leak pretty bad and still pass a "vacuum" test.

Good Luck!
