Iam in the process of installing a 392 Ford crate engine in my 93 Bird. About the same process as you are going through, except I need to use a cowl hood. Its a shame nobody makes any good headers for the 5.0 series Birds. Mac use to, and another company is now, but 1 1/2 only I will get a set of custom 1 3/4 long tubes made up for this when done. Hope you enjoy yours.

Here is the engine going into mine:

Here is the hood:

Thats one cool hood, I will be getting an aftermarket scoop for my hood for now. I can't get the air cleaner on. I am using mustang shorty headers, I believe any newer mustang ones will work on yours.

Tell me more about the Mustang shorty headers you are using. The ones I tried when using the old 5.0 would not clear the steerring shaft. I guess wth the taller 351 block, the Stang headers are able to clear. What brand, and are they 1 5/8 or 1 3/4. Do you have a model number? I want long tubes when done, but a set of good shorties wlll do for this year. I have my complete exhaust done, from just where the converters were, to the rear. I would just need a set of short down tubes made up then.

Nice to bump into another Bird man. If I dont get into the mid low to mid 11s when done, here is what is going on it:

They should have it ready to hit the market by the time I am ready to hit the strip.

TurboCoupe50 has BBK 1-5/8" headers, check out his car on the "your cars" pages.

My '88 bird is a Fox chassis, so basicly Mustang parts generally fit. The MN12 chassis on the '89 up Bird poses a different set of challenges. I don't have a clue what headers will fit.

JBA makes some (1 1/2 primaries) for $500, and Mac did make some 1 1/2s also. I really need 1 3/4, but a good set of 1 5/8 would do. I have tried to get some of the companies to make some REAL headers for these cars, but no luck.

Sorry 392 for not getting back to you on the header problem, what I had to do, is use the steering shaft out of my 84 cougar donar car. It has a u-joint and is longer, so it needs to be cut down in length. The bird already has a u-joint at the column under the dash which is needed. The whole deal was to kick the steering shaft out of the way with the two u-joints. I also had to modify the firewall boots. Good luck. When I get a scanner or digital camers, I'll have pics.

The intermediate slip-shaft is what needs to be cut down, not the donar part with the u-joint.
