92 Mercury Grand Marquis

Hi,
I have a florida 92 mercury grand marquis with the V8. Then engine is blown and I would like to replace the engine, however i hear they only made that engine for 2 years. I would like to replace it with a better engine. I can pick up a ford 5.0 engine and transmission for cheap, what is possible and do you know of anyone that can do the labor in or around ft lauderdale/Miami area for a reasonable price? What is the best engine to replace this engine with?

Was your car made before 2/92, and has the std AOD tranny(not AOD-E)? Why Ford would change the 4.6's bellhousing bolt pattern from the 5.0 pattern, to a unique 4.6 pattern when they switched to the AOD-E is beyond me. Just about the stupidest thing they've ever done('94-'95 5.0 Stangs use a AOD-E with the original pattern).

Installing a 5.0 will be a major PITA, since the 5.0 uses a distributor and the 4.6 is DIS. Other things to consider is exaust hookup, linkages, motor mounts, even the hoses and radiator are different. One possibility for parts, would be to check out the '90 Lincoln Town Car. I hear it has the same chassis but was still equip with a 5.0. The easiest thing would be to get a rebuilt or good used(lots a luck) 4.6 like you have now

The engine you mention is actually only a 1 2/3 year ('91, Lincolns only thru mid '92). I know about this POS, as I have a '92 Grand Marquis built 8/91.

Read this and you know more than you ever wanted to about the 4.6. Really makes me appreciate the 5.0s. http://www.babcox.com/editorial/ar/eb40228.htm

So one variation of the 4.6 had the same bellhousing pattern as a 5.0? I see alot of potential in the design, but I also see a lot of room for improvement! I had a 95 4.6 and a 2000 5.4 engine, finally got rid of the blocks. The PI heads have ALOT of potential, just stand one next to a pre 99 head and check out the ports. I have a set of each, currently for sale.
