Headers-long or short for a 5.0

I was trying to find the tech article in the archives (here on FM) about 5.0 headers.

I was hoping for some dyno numbers showing that long tube headers provide more torque in the low and mid range.

Anybody see this past article???

Thanks.

I don't know about the artical. Here's my experience. 1 5/8 equal length shorties matched the 1 3/4 long tube Mac's on the 85GT. Same et.

If a car turns the same ET with 1 5/8 shorties as it does with 1 3/4 long tubes, the engine is not any where built propperly to utilize the there size. My 392 stroker dynoed at 520 hp@6,000 rpms with 1 3/4, and only 495 with 1 5/8 shorties. The power curve was much broader with the LPs also, and the 1 5/8 did not develope higher HP or torque at any RPM. If you are under 375 HP, you do not want 1 3/4 primaries.

There is no doubt that long tubes will yeild more mid-top range. In fact most of what I have seen shows they usually give more low end too. the decision to go with longtubes usually isn't one about power, but more of price and fitment. If you have the money, and are not worried about a little more time and cussing during install, go with it.

It is very possible that 85mike's answer will be correct for many, many Mustangs out there. A near stock 5.0 will not show much of a difference in power comparing short vs long tube headers. One will notice a big difference as the test engine makes more power. A stock 5.0 vs a 392 will give very different results.
