Help! serpentine belt headache

I'm eliminating my smog pump on an 89 with a GT 40 302 (it just seized up in the drive way and I figured I'd eliminate it rather than buy a pulley kit. I'm not sure how to re-route it and how long the new belt should be. Please help if you can.

Thanks, mbeaty

FYI, Track Auto sells rebuilt smog pumps for about $40. They just replace the bearing.

I'm not sure on the length of belt but you can do this if you don't want to keep the smog pump.

Starting at the alt., belt goes under the tensioner around the AC comp. down to the PS pulley, then up and around the pass. side of the WP pulley and around the driver's side of the crank pulley and back up to the alt. If you don't have AC, belt goes around the PS (mounted up high from Ford if it's factory and untouched) then toward the pass. side of the WP pulley and around the driver's side of the crank pulley to the alt. pulley. Hope this helps.

Tony

ps.... to determine length of belt run a piece of string around the pullies in the correct order mentioned then measure and get the correct length of belt, maybe subtract an inch or so to take into account the tensioner.

Get a Summit catalog, and order a smog pump eliminater kit for 40 bucks and do it the right way. It's easy, and you have to worry about trying to piece things together or "rig" anything.

Running the serpentine belt the way I described has nothing to do with being right or wrong or "rigging anything up."

Smog pump eliminator kits or whatever they're called weren't around 11-12 years ago when I did my 351W EFI swap into my 89 LX 5.0L. I ran J302 heads (no AIR provisions on those heads) so obviously the air pump had to go. Running the belt the way I described was the only way around that problem and the whole therm-actor system can be removed leaving a clean area on the lower pass. side.

Save your $40 and spend it elsewhere, you don't need that eliminator kit to run your other accessory drives with a serpentine belt. Just remove your air pump system if you want to do it and route the belt around the pullies the way I mentioned in my previous post.

I agree with Cman. Getting a shorter belt to bypass the pump surely is not rigging. If anything adding a bracket and pulley is rigging. Spend $40 so I don't have to buy a $8.00 belt????? I don't think so.
