Thinking about doing a 347 buildup of a 5.0 for stealth use in my '90 LX. Is anybody running a stroker and passing smog as a 5.0? If so, what combo are you using?
I have a 347 motor from probe in my 1985 mustang (converted to fuelinjection a9l) with edelbrock performer heads, flat top pistons, and a .510" I .536 E lift 289 I deg 299E deg adv duration. I run a gt40 intake with 24lbs injectors And a custom chip. the car passes every time TEST ONLY. The smog guy never asks about the fuel injection (car was originally carburated). Chris
I have a 347-E from CHP also. It passed with flying colors with an all Trick Flow top end. It puts out great torque (375+ lb. ft. at the wheels/430+ at the flywheel).
I have since swapped to a Holley SysteMax intake and a custom cam...hasn't been e-tested yet.
A key thing to passing is the converters on your H-pipe...they do work. Make sure the converters are good and warm when you have the test done.
My 85 carbed 347 passed with flying colors.347,E303,all smog equipt.intact.As stated make sure your cats are good. Also make sure they are hot when testing.
How is the E303 in a 347? I have one in my 5.0 and like the idle & power, but have thought it might be a little docile in a bigger motor. I was thinking that in a 347 an F303 would be like the E303 is in my 302. Anybody have any thoughts on whether the increase in cubes also warrants a hotter cam?
Yes, the 45 extra cubic inches likes more cam. I found this out the hard way.
CHP offers cams to match their E-legal shortblocks. I think the Ford E-cams a little out-dated now, but they still work.
I'm passing emissions testing with roughly 30* duration and .540" lift. The ticket is propably the lobe speration of 114*. The car idles nice, but pulls to 6000 rpm.
Another key to passing emissions is the converters...they work.
Agreed - my 90 LX with E303, GT40 heads, shorties, etc., runs cleaner out the pipes than my stock 90 LX, which I attribute to the relatively fresh BBK 2.5" converter H-pipe vs. the stock converters.
