Did the stock GTs come with 2.73 gears in the mid 80's? Is anyone running a modified motor with those gears? If so what kind of 1/4 mile times are you getting. Thanks for the time.

2.73's and 3.08's were stock gears in a 5.0.

How can you tell which ones you have?

You can crawl under and read the tag or put both rears on jackstands, spin the driveshaft by hand and count the revs.

I am running a 73 mustang, with 4.33 Richmond gears. I switched from the 2.73 cause I really didn't need to be going 160 MPH, esspecially when the car can't handle that speed. I have a friend that has a 72 Mustang Coupe with the 302 with a Mini-Blower, he is still running the 2.73 gears, and he is getting low-14's in the 1/4 mile. If you have the HP and Torque to get the car going with 2.73 then stay with it, in the long run your going to have the TOP SPEED.

i believe the fox bodies came with 2.73 in the LX and 3.08 in the GT. most people step up to the 3.73. if not the 3.73 they will go for the 3.55. all those assuming you stick with the 8.8" and not hop up to the almighty 9

On the 87-93 cars the stock ratio was 2.73 code (M) upgrade for 5 speed was 3.08 (Z) Upgrade for AOD was 3.27 (E) These codes are visible on the door data tag under (AX). Remember this is what the car with from the factory, not necessarily what's in there now. If unsure, go underside and do the spin the D/S trick. Count 1 rev on the tire and how many times the D/S spins. EX. 3-1/2 D/S spins would be 3.55's, 2-3/4 2.73's etc.

My 93 5.0 LX convertible w/AOD has 3.27's as well...I read somewhere that it was an option.
BTW if all else fails, crawl under the rear end and read the tag on the diff...mine says 3L27.
