hyd / solid roller?

I dont think a regular split duration and lift cam would be needed with those heads unless your going to try to run some converters and full exhaust.

something with 248 duration and .600 lift would get that thing breathing. Sounds like oyur going to need some major dyno/computer tunning and I wouldn't expect it to idle any lower than 1150rpm's

It will definatly be computer tuned. The car has full exhaust ran with no converters. The gear ratio is 3.08. The Last cam (before I met the detonation demon) was a
.540"/.560" 225/232 deg dur with a112 lobe ctr. With that cam the motor passed smog (with converters) and idled very smoothly. Now I want to push the envlope even further and see what I can get away with. The .600" lift sounds good but thats pushing my luck with the springs that I have. I found a crower cam that has 234/240 deg dur on a 110 lobe ctr, .534"/545" liftwith 1.6 rockers will add 1.7 rockers. What does that bring my lift to??? This is not a drag car, mainly a weekend/opentrack toy.

Take a look at the TFS stg3 cam. I put one in my 302 with systemax heads but have yet to fire it. I think it has more exhaust duration than you'll need with those afr heads, but since your running it out the back through mufflers it might not be a bad idea to use a split duration cam. You need more gear, put those 3.08's in the trash.

Specifications:
* Advertised duration: 286 intake/298 exhaust
* Duration at .050 in. cam lift: 236 intake/248 exhaust
* Gross valve lift: .574 in. intake/.595 in. exhaust
* Lobe separation: 110 degrees
* RPM range: 3,500-7,000
* 1,600 to 2,200 cruise rpm
* 10:1 to 11.5:1 compression ratio recommended
* Rough idle, strong top-end horsepower, 3,000 to 3,500 rpm stall converter, 3.90 to 4.11 gears

When you bought your 185s, did you get the "bigger lift cam" package? If yes, then you dont have to worry about lift. If no, then the lift #s you cited probably will work, BUT you may want to check the spring height. I think they are set at 1.770 and probably have about 140 to 145 lbs. on them. You can back them off (pull .030 out by manipulating shims) and end up at 135lbs + or - at an installed height of 1.80 which will buy you back some lift room.

There were some great articles in 5.0 or MMFF about comps
line of cams. There 282HR got some great attention and made
awsome power in windsor based strokers. Even 302 based strokers it made impressive power..... for a street based
motor i would probably go hydraulic but, for serious street
and racing i would run a solid...E
