5.0 engine assembly ( long )

Hope someone can help me here....I've got a 5.0 that is unassembled a need some help figuring it all out... the timing chain is a motorsport with multi adjustments and was at 4 degrees.... I took the motor apart 2 years ago to replace the blown head gaskets and haven't been able to work on it until now... the distributor is out...the heads are off... I put the timing chain back to 0 degrees when I first pulled the motor apart, however I can't remember what I did or if its right. What I need to know now is how do I check to make sure that the timing chain is at 0 degrees as I have no real reference points that I can think of... when I put the heads back on does the cam have to be in a certain spot or do I worry about that after the heads are on....the timing pointer is off( as well as the timing cover and water pump at this point )How do I set up the value train etc. Any help on getting me going on this again would be greatly appreciated...as you can probably tell I'm not fully verse in this stuff so what may seem obvious to you may not to me....thanks

On the cam you mentioned that it was previously at 4*..that
would be 4* degrees advanced. if its a three keyed gear on the crank you have the option of straight up, advanced or retarded. advancing a cam brings the powerband down a couple
hundred rpm. retarding it brings the band up. being a street
car i would put it in at 4*A advance..the keyway on the crank should be straight up.thats TDC (top dead center).
put the keyway marked 4A there.
the camshaft gear has a dot on it. That will go straight down at the bottom (180 degrees). you want to align those 2 marks. then remove the cam gear just enought to install the
chain and work it back on..make sure your dowel pin is long enough.. should be at least 3/4 of the way through the gear to flush...
valve train geometry is very important..what kind of rockers do you have? stock stamped steel, bolt down roller
rockers, or adjustable roller rockers? if you have anymore questions you can email me direct at eric.r.larson@lmco.com
