alternator

well, this morning i walked out of my house, got in my car, and tried to start it. Well it didnt start so i used my moms van to try and jump it. the battery meter showed the 14v yet it still did what it did before - it just sat there and made the "erererererer noise". So i figure it must either be the alternator or starter. Well i have a spare alternator sitting in my garage that i decided to put in. I unbolted the old one, but it seems to be stuck in place. It turns and stuff, but it just wont slide out. I started tappin on it with a hammer and that didnt work so i figured, its not comin out and im not gonna reuse it, so i started pounding on it. it slid mayb an inch downward but still wouldnt come out. All i have out of it now are some scrapes on my hands, a hole in my alternator casing from hitting it, and a hole in my airbox lid from missing the alternator once. Anyone have any suggestions and also, does it sound like its the alternators fault for not starting?

is the alt stuck in the bracket? are all the bolts removed? I would try a pry bar while wigling the alt back and forth. good luck.

The alternator has nothing to do with starting, it is basically just used to recharge the battery and supply the current needed to keep the engine runnig, once it is started.

Why did you start there?

I would strongly suggest checking for fuel or spark...after you replace the alternator, fix the airbox, etc.

By the way. What kind of car (year, engine, etc?), is it? A lot of the 80's cars had an ignition module attached to the distributor that will just go bad from heat, no warning, no symptoms.

well, i got the alternator out, but i cant get the new one in completly because the bolt doesnt seem to want to line up. But anyways, its a 91 stang gt. when i tried to start it, it stayed at a constant ~300rpm.

well, after toying with the thing for about an hour, i finally got the bolt in, it seemed it was lining up right on the threaded part because the bracket is a bit tight. Anyways, after bolting in the alternator, it just decided to start right up. I dont know what was wrong with it, but the only thing that matters is it runs now.

Hopefully this isnt a preview of me trying to put on my new intake and heads and maybe some other goodies

I have a 94 GT, it had a problem similar to yours, it was the ignition module, and stator inside the distributor I had to replace.Check these things out if you start having a problem with it shutting off randomly while you drive and then the same starting problem.Or if it was me go ahead and check them out now, all you need is a multimeter, and the specs for your app.Good luck.

alright, well, the car started up for me to go to work today, but then i got off work and it didnt wanna start. It does turn over (the belt does move around the pulleys) but it just stays at a constant ~300rpm, it has spark, i added about 1/2 gal fuel to the tank just to make sure it had some, it has a good battery/alt. my friend said if the starter was bad you would hear it sound like it was choking and gaging, but its just going "ererererer". Another person said that my fuel pump may be bad and not pumping fuel. So whats wrong with it?
Thanks in advance,
Alex

Several people have suggested that you change the ignition module. Have you tried that yet?

If the car was running, I doubt if the fuel pump is the culprit. Have someone stand near the back of the car, then turn on the ignition can you hear the pump start up? It isn't a perfect test, but if it is running the pump is probably not the problem at idle, a weak pump will show up when it can't keep up with the fuel demands of the engine - at speed. What might be happenning is a dirty fuel filter. If it hasn't been relpace in a while. Matter of fact, when you change it, it would be a perfect time to see if the fuel pump is working. Run a hose from the open line to a container...if you are comfortable with doing math, you could figure out how much fuel is being pumped by measuring how much fuel is pumped into the container over 5 (or 10) seconds. Once you get hose numbers, then match that against liters/minute or hour.

well, when the car did start it was running fine, so i dont c how it can be the fuel filter. because it did not want to start before so i changed the alt and it started and now it doesnt start again. i mean it just doesnt unclog itself and clog back up sometimes, does it? So most of you are thinking its the ignition module? So if its the ignition box, i would think its a good time to get the MSD 6, coil, wires, and plugs
