I've got a really low mile 86 HO. I'm guessing less than 30k. All tolerances are well within specs. It's out of the car, on a stand. I'm keeping the EFI.

Are there any good heads that will bolt on with the flat top pistons?

I was thinking maybe the twisted wedge heads would fit. Along with an eftermarket intake. Motorsport cam with a lope.

The engine's going in a 65 ford econoline with a finished weight around 2500lbs and a beefed up AOD. I'll probably run 3.9o's or so in the factory 9 inch. I have long tube headers specifically for the 302/econoline swap. Exhaust will be about a 3 foot run dumping in front of the rear tires.

Any suggestions to make some good HP. I'd love to be over 300hp. I don't mind running mid grade or premium, it's not a daily driver.

Eric

Save yourself the aggravation and just drop in some new pistons/rings. You won't be able to run any worth while cam with the FT pistons.

Thanks for the suggestion.

The factory hone marks are visible all the way around each cylinder. I'm sure the motor wasn't touched before I opened it up. I've done a bunch of complete rebuilds with overbore, but never a refresh. Should I hone the cylinders, or just put the new pistons/rings in?

How do you guys like the GT-40 Y303 heads? Price is right....

Y303's are OK just not as commonly used as the X303's.

for my 86 I bought KB performance pistons (KB115) and childs and albert moly rings for about $245 including shipping from United Engine and Machine co. I'd just bore .30 over and save yourself the headache, than you can use whatever head you want. I think the valve reliefs on the 115 is up to 2.10.

I run the Twisted Wedges on a stock '86 short block using the Trick Flow Stage-1 cam. I've been very happy with it, all the cam I'd ever want(My Bird is mostly a street car). Its enough cam that you'll have a nice little lope.

I've got the twisted wedge heads now. Lot's of clearance there with stock pistons. I called trick flow, and they said I should be able to run .540 lift with stock pistons, I measured with clay and the stock cam, and I think I could safely run even more than that. maybe .550 or .560. Doesn't matter, I'll be running around .500 or so.

Dunno if you guys read it or not, but Car Craft took a stock 5.0 shortblock and did a nice build

Let me quote the second paragraph:

"The key to this remarkable achievement is simple: one awesome set of cylinder heads. Heads so good in fact, that there are worth about 100hp over a set of stock 5.0L Mustang heads on their own."

100 hp for under $1400.

Here's what they used:
stock '91 5.0L short block
AFR 165 heads PN 1472 from AFR for $1325
Comp Cams 1.7:1 roller rockers PN 1054-16 from Jeg's for $378.99
Arp head bolts $37.99
Fel-Pro head and intake gaskets $81.97
Weiand intake manifold $165.99
Road Demon Jr. Carb $259.95
and Doug's Tri-Y headers for $549.95

So 405 hp at 6,200 and 380 ft-lbs at 4,300 doesn't sound too bad for $2,799.84? All on the best cam IMO for driveability - the stock Ford HO
And don't quote me on this, but with a stock cam the AFR heads may not give you any P/V clearance issues.
