Gas Mileage in 89 Mustang 5.0

Okay my racecar is in the garage, and I need to work on gas mileage for my daily driver because I have to commute 90 miles every day to college. The car is pretty much all stock except an off road h-pipe. Where would you start the performance mods to increase gas mileage? Headers? MSD box? Catback? Pulleys? Throttle body? Mass Air meter? etc. Start with biggest bang for the buck on gas mileage.

Thanks
Hilary

Do a full tuneup, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, clean the IAC, set the TPS and keep the tires fully inflated.

What's the current mpg? Is it a manual or auto? What is your usual cruising speed? Tire size? Gear ratio?

Here's a few things I'd suggest based on the limited info: Lowering springs, Electric fan, Electric WP(CSI or Mezerie). Pulleys will help if it doesn't affect the cooling or charging systems.

Currently 12/22 mpg. Auto. 255/50/16 I think and 2.73 gears I believe. Usually cruise on the highway is about 75 I would guess.

The city mileage is awful and the highway could be better. With that large of a tire I'd switch to 3.55's, cause you don't have much mechanical advantage with 2.73's and 255 tires. MPG should be best cruising at about 2200-2500rpm(in general).

BTW my calc's put you at 1750 rpm at 75mph with 255/50/16's and 2.73 gears. It's 2300 rpms with 3.55's.

FYI: My 89 gets 15-16 in the city and 20-21 highway so your's can be improved.
