fuel system problem

I have a full size 87 Bronco EFI. I have a 190 lph in the tank and then an inline pump and then the filter. Between the intank pump and inline pump there is a resorvoir with filter. The excess gas from the engine is pumped to this resorvior and then to the gas tank but also forward to the engine again. My gas is heating up because the resorvior only holds about a pint and when I am running the engine hard the gas really gets hot. Would it be possible to direct the returning gas directly to the tank and just put another filter in place of the resorvior? Isn't that how an EFI car does it? Any help would be appreciated.
