Does it only do this when you first start it up? If so, then that is the normal operation for the 5.0 fuel injection. At start up, the computer runs the idle up for a few seconds and then it settles down into it's normal idle.

Soft or high idle frequently indicates a vacuum leak. Take a good look for broken, disconnected or brittle vacuum lines.

Is this an AOD stang? If so this was the same trouble I had/have. I just kept mess with the idle and adjusting the TPS and it is pretty good now. I am running a B-cam for what that is worth.
I did talk to a friend of mine wha o has been working fords for 30+ years and he was telling me that the auto cars have a small hang in the idle when you free rev. If you notice when you put it in gear it goes up a few RMPs. I could me wrong and if you do not have an AOD just forget what I said.
