Coolant in the oil

A friends car (93 Mustang) has a 306 with Trick Flow TW heads, Trick Flow Track Heat intake, F-cam, and all the other obligatory stuff.
*Actually when the following episode happened he had a Edelbrock upper intake with a Typhoon lower.


A little while back, he installed an electric fan. Well, it quit working one day and the temp creeped up. He said the needle wasn't pegged, but it got hot for a few minutes.

Since then he has been getting coolant in the oil.
So he was doing some other work to the car, and had the upper intake off. Well with this Edelbrock, a nut and washer go inside the intake to hold it down. Apperantly the washer made it's way down into cylinder #4. He didn't realize it at the time. The car got put back together and started. As you can guess, it made quite a racket.

So the right head got removed, cleaned out the debris, Actually there was no damage to the head or piston, put everything back together, new head gasket, Still getting coolant in the oil.

He did notice milk in the lifter valley when the lower intake was off. So he figured the Typhoon lower was warped causing a leak between the intake and head. So he got a new Trick Flow track heat and installed it.

Coolant loss was minimized. Definetly not as bad as before, but there is still a problem.

He noticed if he drives the car easy, it holds the coolant. Hit the gas a couple times, he's got green oil...

We're out of ideas without tearing the whole motor down... Don't want to do that right now.

Sorry this got so long, if anyone made it to this point, do you have any suggestions?

Since it's worse under power, its either a head gasket, cracked head, or block. I take it from your info the left head has not been off even though the intake has been off twice??

I'd say head gasket also. Plus, the inside of the cylinder bore and head may have looked OK, but I would also check for bent valves. A nut in the cylinder took out a half dozen of mine.

Yeah, he only pulled the right head off. The left hasn't been checked yet.

my guess is that its a head gasket as well. Check the compression on wich ever side cylinders you havent put a new head gasket on. Is the car smoking at all?

Nope. We had it idling the other day for about 10 minutes and I didn't see anything. The car runs perfect. It'll probably run low 12's all weekend and get you back and forth to work all week. It just keeps getting that coolant in the oil...
