Hey guys. I know these types of questions get asked a lot and they get repetitive...
But I can't make up my mind.
This is a drag strip only car. No street use. I still have the power booster on the brakes though, so I need to keep a little vacuum... Also I don't want to dump a lot of money into this motor so I'm just looking at off-the-shelf cams for now. When I grenade this shortblock, I'll build a real motor for it.

I'm thinking about:
"B" cam with 1.7 rockers
TFS Stage-1 cam with 1.6's
Crower 15511 with 1.7's

Here's some specs on the car:
Stock 1987 shortblock.
GT40 heads.
Cobra intake.
76mm MAF
70mm throttle body.
T-5
4.10 gears
26" tire
3000 lbs

Thanks for any help.

If you have stock un-ported GT40 heads, you will not make much more power then stock, no matter how much lift you put on a cam. The 1.7 rockers will only add stress to your valve train, and you will loose low end torque.

Sorry, but the GT40 heads are barly better then stock. You can put 50 - 70 hours of porting work in them and get more power, but cam/rocker changes alone will not gain you much.

Mike, Lift and power isn't as much an issue at this point as is moving the power into a more useful RPM range. Even with the intake and heads, one of those cams should do that to some degree... hopefully.
I don't want to spend money on the whole top end of this stock shortblock, only to have to upgrade again in the winter when I build a better motor. So I gotta deal with what I got until then.

Joe, Thanks for the recommendation. That's what I was leaning towards. Problem is finding a decent used one...

There are guys that use that cam and swap it out when they step things up. Used ones pop up every now and then.

Try Hardcore 5.0, Stangnet, Corral and maybe NMRA classified areas.

Good luck.

Damn. Just missed it. That went for a good price too...

Yeah, I've been browsing all the forums looking for one. They go quick when someone puts one up for sale...

I've got a Crower 15511 on the way. I'll see how it runs with the stock 1.7's...

Now to start saving up for a TFS Track Heat top end kit for next year...
