make sure your on the comprssion stroke, when you time it pull the spout connector out so the computer doesnt mess with ya.then when you have your timing set put the spout back in and your set

Re: How to set timing base procedure
Just remember what notched said.
Bring #1 up on compression stroke.
The rotor will turn about 1 1/4" from contact to fully seated, so back off one tooth to bring it in to the area you want your #1 wire to be on the cap.
Remember that the firing order alway's remains the same, and you can make the #1 wire go to ANY post you wish it to on your dist cap, and the direction the rotor points to in relationship to the #1 cylinder is absolutley up to your personal preference.
If you need more assisatance, just let us know.

Man, that reminds me of when I was in high school, we had to put a distributor in a Ford 300 I6, well the nimrod...does nothing but work on cars kind of guy...that was working on it simply yanked the dist out...didn't mark anything...and stuck the new on in, stuck the new wires on it and fired it...needless to say it ran like total a$$. The teacher walked up and asked what the hell did you do? Uh, well, uh, we'll just rewire the cap to make it run right...the teacher didn't like that answer at all and said no, you're going to do it the right way.
Pull the #1 plug, put your finger over the hole, crank the engine over, and wait untill it blows your finger off the hole, line up the TDC on the balancer to the timing pointer, and drop the dist in with the rotor pointing to the #1 wire post. And what do you know, the truck ran like a cherry after that...
Trust me, it can be frustrating sometimes to line up a dist., with the curvature of the dist gear, and the oil pump drive shaft. Sometimes you'll have to work it a little to get it in.

Re: How to set timing base procedure
That is NOT what I ment TegoMan LMAO!
I ment that you can point the rotor up your nose and place the wires accordingly and it will NOT effect ANYTHING... It's simple.
I didn't say put the wires wherever you want and start it...
If the #1 cyl is TDC on compression and you stab the Distributor to have the rotor pointing at the firewall, and run the wires from that point, nothing will be amiss.
GOSH!
It's nice to do it like the book does and point the rotor twards the front of the engine or twards the #1 cylinder but it has no relevance to the function of the engine...
FE
P.S. sorry if this confuses anyone but it's just the way it is...

Well said, Gary, just that some people wont get it! I know what you mean: its true. Probably best for most to do it by the book, at least the teacher has something to look for !?$

Re: How to set timing base procedure
A'ight FE...I just said it reminded me of some dumba$$ that i went to school with...don't go all better than thou on me... Although most, if not all, dist caps are marked with the #1...it just looks funny with the #5 plug wire on the #1 post.
You know what, that deserves one of these...

Oh that's right, I went there...
But seriously ryhed, go by the book to install the distributor, warm up the engine, pull the spout, set the timing, install the spout and you'll be good to go. Trust me, I've installed my dist one tooth off before...well it was in right...but I wanted more timing and the TFI module on the dist was hitting the water outlet on the 'ol Cleveland, and I just HAD to have more initial timing...hmmmmmph, oh well... Darn Duraspark to TFI conversions... Darn EFI Clevelands...
