1988 5.0L truck block

I got a 1988 5.0L engine out of a F-150 truck. When I took the engine apart I found a flat tappet hyd. cam. I thought all late model 5.0 engines were hyd rolloer cam equipped. Now I am woundering if this is a roller block. My plan was to make a sweet street motor out of it. Dose anyone have info on the 1988 truck block?

Re: 1988 5.0L truck block

There are three types of 302s made from 1982-2001.
  • 5.0L HO This engine was used in 1983-1995 Mustangs, Mark VII Lincolns, and some T-birds and Cougars. All Explorer 5.0L engines are 5.0L HO engines as well. They use the 351W firing order, 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. Except for the 1983-84 Mustangs, all of these engines are roller cam equipped. They use a reverse rotation water pump and front cover. The 1994-5 Mustang and all Explorers use a unique front cover and water pump.
  • 5.0L Full Size Car This engine was used in 1982-1990 Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis. They use the 289-302 firing order, 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. Most of these cars are not roller cam equipped, however sometime in the early 1990s they started using roller cams but retained the 302 firing order. They use a standard (clockwise) rotation water pump and front cover.
  • 5.0L Truck (except Explorer) These engines are similar to the Full Size Car engines, except they use different intake manifolds and camshaft profiles. They also use the 289-302 firing order, 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. They also began using roller cams sometime in the early 1990s. They use a reverse rotation water pump and front cover.

Re: 1988 5.0L truck block

Could I reason with this info that the castings were all the same? What I am trying to find out is if this '88 truck block has the taller lifter bosses to support a hyd. roller cams. Or will I have to use one with a reduced base circle.

If it as 88, it should be a roller block. FORD is cheap so they wouldn't have had two blocks in service.

Re: 1988 5.0L truck block

It should be a roller block, unless someone changed it.

The Lifter bores will be machined on the top and it will have two threaded holes in the valley for the metal spider if its a roller one.

Re: 1988 5.0L truck block

my 1994 5.0L equppied F-150 had the 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 firing order and mass air (first year for MA). I don't know if it had a roller cam or not since I never took it apart.

Re: 1988 5.0L truck block

I sent the block to be cleaned, bored, new cam bearings ect. for the build. As far as the machined lifter bosses I am at a loss. There was nothing machined other than the lifter bores. There are a couple tapped holes which appears to be something like a 1/4-20 in the lifter valley. I would assume as stated above that Ford wouldn't cast two sperate 5.0 blocks. I apreciate your help. If you think of anything else it would be greatly appreciated.

I have a photo but I don't know how to add it to this post. I have uploaded a photo. I hope you can see it.
