Re: 1989 351W EFI tweak
Alas....the debate continues. I appreciate all of the feedback. Part of glory of posting questions is the wide degree of opinions. They are all good input.
I've been reading everything I can find concerning mild to wild builds on the 351W EFI. I dig the engine, always have. I like it even more now with the fuel injection. I like carbs...but just get tired of the seasonal tuning and occasional burps and hung linkage and dah da dah (the list goes on and on).
The speed density version of the ford EFI does not really bother me so much but I read so much that implies that it can get lost if you try to improve throttle response. I like good throttle response and would like to tap a little fuel economy now that my big ride habits result in my getting raped on a regular bases buying fuel. How much fuel economy....well, a goal would be 18 mpg (not likely). I'm a real big guy (350) and just hate the thought of squeezing into a midsize with my legs around my neck and steering wheel rubbing my thighs. The ole Broncos are comfortable and a price has to be paid for that.
If I could find a good combo (roller cam, computer, and a good port job on my factory heads, maybe GT40's) that would keep me daily driving the Bronc with the ole speed density set up, I'd do it. I just have to recon the parts and play in the garage for a bit.
I currently drive a 78 Bronco daily now (400M/C6, headers, duals, eldelbrock performer w/holley 4160). She needs a rest and I want to do a bodyoff on her. The 78 is extremely rust free and to good to waste by not giving her a good facelift. Believe it or not boys, I nail a consistent 14-mpg on 89 octane. Not to shabby for a 400M warhorse TIPPING THE SCALES AT 6200#.
