Super Chip...96 T-Bird...Check Engine Light

I just bought a 1996 T-Bird and the check engine light is on, when I asked about it I was told it has a chip in it and thats why the light is on....its a Super Chip but I have no idea where its located or how it works.....can it be the cause for the light to be on and is that normal?

The chip plugs in the back of the computer test port. Yes, I supose it could throw a "check" light. I had one in a 95 linc. mark 8 that did that and I took chip out and cleaned computer terminals were chip plugs in with a little alchol and green scotch brite pad but be GENTLE. Problem is I am a Mustang man and dont know were your computer is at. May be in one of the kick panels or in the dash just to the left of steering wheel. Keep in mind also that there are at least 20 other reasons for a "check" light. If cleaning chip dont work then I would take it to shop and have them "pull" out the code. That will drastically narrow down your choices. Nothing you ever add or do to a car that kicks out a check code is NORMAL. It IS NOT !!

on eec-iv cars you can jump the self test wire to read the codes through flashes of the check light. you may also be able to do that with obd-II. the light may be referring to something else that has nothing to do with the alleged chip (you don't know if it has one) check rs kick panel for pcm

To answer your question, yes you can unplug it . IF in fact you have one . Make sure you use a good heavy duct tape to reseal the test port and dont forget to unhook battery to reset computer. Yes you can count codes grounding the STI to any ground point on the car in OBDI for sure if you like counting cryptic flashes and pauses and then never really being sure if you got it right. If you have a fair amount of experience at this then "go for it" but elseways just have a tech pull the codes and then your sure you got it right . You can also buy a code reader at any parts store rangeing from 50 -200 bucks. OBDI the cheapest which is what you have.

I have a Actron OBDII #CP9175 wonder if it will work? says 96 and newer, what ya think? I know the GM stuff used to have the plug to read codes under the steering colume, I have no idea where it is on this thing.

Sorry , but NOPE it will not read. OBD1 means OBD1. This also must be a reader for a Ford car. Plug is in engine compart. Probably attached to the strut tower on the drivers side. Dont freak if you cant find it right away. Mine had be pulled off tower for testing and never resecured and it was just hanging. Its about 2" wide and flat on top and bottom but triangle edges on both upper sides . If the cover is still on it should say somthin like "Diag.Port" or "Test Port". It really aint hard to find. Buddy , you NEED A SHOP MANUAL!!! Best $75 bucks i ever spent.

Re: Super Chip...96 T-Bird...Check Engine Light

Well it did have a chip in it but it don't now, light is off, I'll need to drive it and see if it comes back on. Guess I'll get me a manual and a deal to pull codes down, I know I'll need it at some point.

Glad u got rid of "check light" . Dont give up on chip though. Clean computer test port like I post before. "Super Chips" is a great product. Worst thing that could happen is u clean it and it dont work and u have to unplug again. Another possiability is that chip may be old and heat is a BIG problem with chips.
