Re: 1978 Ford Ranger 4x4 - Anticipation

nice build so far, but I just gotta mention that your oil filter is in a HORRIBLE spot. The first time you get into dirt you'll probably realize that, though.

Especially once you upsize those tires.

Re: 1978 Ford Ranger 4x4 - Anticipation

Hey nice build, I want to lift my '79 4x4, but I'm content with my factory setup 4wd, just need to get my push bumper on yet and make a new back bumper.
I was going to suggest a brake upgrade I saw on another side, using a '79 F350 2wd booster, some torino brake calipers {same identical sized caliper, but bigger, metal piston as opposed to our phonlic setup.
I was shown this by a buddy with a lowered '78 with a 460 who did the conversion.
I hate taking info like this, but figure you and any other 78-79 guys should know about this.

Re: 1978 Ford Ranger 4x4 - Anticipation

Yeah...I do plan to relocate the oil filter again, but the current location works well for now.

elite...already knew of the f350 brake upgrade, but this will be getting a ford 10.25 rear with disks and a front 8-lug swap...so I'll have the huge dual piston calipers. I know it's not absolutely necessary, but I'd rather have full float than semi float.

That sounds like a killer upgrade. Nothing wrong with wanting heavier axles, especially if you do alot of towing, using factory parts.
Have a good one.

Re: 1978 Ford Ranger 4x4 - Anticipation

I've been too busy working on household items and family shtuff, but a couple of updates.

1 1978 Ford F-150 rear suspension pictures, videos, and sounds | SuperMotors.net - Changed the rear springs to chevy 64", which moved the axle back 3" and moved the front spring hanger forward 4". This gave me better shackle angle and hopefully better suspension travel when I change to Deaver F70's somewhere in the future. And I need a local fab shop to make some traction devices as the springs are beginning to bend from the torquey engine.

2 1978 Ford F-150 flatbed pictures, videos, and sounds | SuperMotors.net- Changed the rusty stock bed to a PNP aluminum channel flatbed. Took about 5-6 hours to disassemble in the junkyard and 3+ weekends of cutting, grinding, measuring, drilling, bolting to get to this point. I'm currently fitting 2x8 redwood timber to fill the framework.

3 - I'm waiting for the economy to improve before updating the drivetrain for 37" tires.

Re: 1978 Ford Ranger 4x4 - Anticipation

Engine - Ford 400 rebuilt by TMI with Aussie heads and Price Motorsports adaptors (machined to accept Ford fuel injectors) to mount a 351C manifold.

EFI - 89-93 Mustang 5.0 HO configuration

EFI harness from rjminjectiontech.comFord sensors

MSD (POC) distributor

75mm PMAS MAF w/ Amsoil EA cone filter

CHP power elbow (it looks like its not made anymore??)

89-93 mustang 5.0 HO BBK 75mm TB

Tweecer R/T hooked to A9L EEC

I'm still tuning since the project took a partial back seat for the summer. Working out a lean tip-in issue at micro-throttle and a 3500 misfire.

I'd rather build for propane next time (cleaner and tax credits ).
