Re: 1968 Mustang - Restomod Hardtop

Then, we had to fix the cowl panel.

After sandblasting, it's a little bit more nice...

Then, the rest of the body has been sandblasted (over and under).

After sandblasting, the metal sheets are exposed to the humidity, weather, bad european conditions so a good protection is required!

Then, another protection paint (2x)

And finally, the final paint, white & parchment for the dashboard (3x)

Re: 1968 Mustang - Restomod Hardtop

Now the paint is good, let's work on the wiring harness. I bought a complete set from Painless, excellent quality, easy to install.

I swapped my drums for 13" disc brake from Vintage Venom. Amazing product.

Rear axle has been rebuild, sandblasted, painted in black. New bearing set, differential and axle ratio.

As you can see: subframe connectors, Traction bar, rear sway bar.

Now, we can move the car!

It's nice! Engine is back and installed!

It looks like to a Mustang now...

Originally, my car had an automatic transmission. I always wanted a manual one so I bought a B&W T10 transmission, it broke at the first engine running, a bearing ceased and broke the transmission. Then, I bought from Modern Driveline a T5Z transmission... Of course, I had to buy a new pedal set, found on Ebay...

After many fuel leaks on the dual feed line (poor quality), I bought a new one from Summit:

Now, the end of this huge topic, yesterday, 11/20/2007. Ready for the final paint: white with 2 blue stripes...

I spent 2 hours to write this. For you, can I proudly say: "It's my Restomod car"? I would say yes but...

I probably forgot some other rusty surprises, I apologyze but I did my best to reduce 3 years of my experience for you...

Thanks dude.

I swapped some problems like the following parts which broke quickly:

- 2 brand new fuel regulator
- 1 brand new fuel pump
- 1 brand new ignition switch

Or quality defect on:

- Door panels: they were like waves...
- Spent work on the fiberglass parts
- New rear bumper: 1/2" too short
...

But at the end of this year, my pony will be impressive!

Wow Sponge that is an awesome writeup and great pics....I would never have guessed you would have so much rust after seeing the first pics you posted with the carpet out and the very clean looking floor...Goes to show you just never know with a 40 year old car...I can't wait to see the finished product.

Re: 1968 Mustang - Restomod Hardtop

Extremely nice writeup, and photo documentation. Seeing the rust sure makes me feel lucky with my '70 Falcon project. I will try to put something together and post it in a new thread as well.

Again, congratulations on your project, and the nice work you have done. You should be very proud.

Re: 1968 Mustang - Restomod Hardtop

Definitely two thumbs up on that project. That is one awesome restoration.
Beautiful car.

BTW it took me two hours to download and read everything with my very slow dialup.

Re: 1968 Mustang - Restomod Hardtop

Thanks guys. I know that hey're a lot of pictures but people does like that and a picture is easier to understand instead of a long text.

My friends sayd: "It's gonna be a bad-ass car" and I trust them

The car should go the the paint this week-end and I'll probably get it back tuesday.

Car will have a pure white paint (like snow), 2 blue stripes and also on the side at the bottom of the door, some blue stripes too. It's gonna be a kind of Shelby clone.

Re: 1968 Mustang - Restomod Hardtop

Here're 2 videos:

Camshaft running in (is it the correct technical word?) at 2500rpm for 25 minutes:

Then, a small start. The fuel pump is noisy but broke the same day. It has been replaced by a more quit one from "Facet". As you'll notice, there's a small pop at the beginning but we have to set correctly the carb:

PS: yes, we can have sun in Europe
