Here are some progress shots from FM subscriber Tim Kollmorgen. He is the guy that bought Project MX from FordMuscle (me) a couple years ago. We asked him to keep FordMuscle updated so we could update you guys. FordMuscle is very happy to have sold the car for a father-son project. We're even happier that Tim has the intention to hold on to the car for family enjoyment.
I added one shot of the car before FordMuscle sold it to Tim. You can guess which one that is. To read more about this car see the
Project Cars section.
More importantly, here are a few words from Tim himself regarding the current condition of the project. Right on Tim! Looks great.
Here are a few shots of the MX after paint but before I have it all put
together. It needs the outside mirrors (one is attached - but I want to hook up the remotes), parking lights, window moldings, and the montego and mx badges. The paint came out pretty nice also. I keep getting compliments from people as I drive it around - and my son just loves it.
We had planned to do most (all) of the bodywork ourselves - but on a whim, I decided to get it estimated by some shops. I was very surprised to get a decent price with a good warranty. My son and I did all of the trim removal and ground down all the metal tabs. We filled about 20 of the nearly 1 bazillion trim holes - and then decided to let the experts do it.
Turns out our trim removal cut down the estimate by a couple hundred bucks! Our total was just over one grand - and I think we got a good value. It has the original color covered with a clearcoat. Is it perfect? Probably not - but it is at least factory good and plenty good for our restomod type driver. The shop that did all this was our local Maaco. I was surprised and impressed with the job. I "visited" a few times during the process and got taken back into the shop each time to see the car and talk to the man working on it - I was glad that I let them do the majority of the bodywork because the materials are better that I could get - or even knew about.
