My Comet

Cool, just what we needed,a Maverick forum. I inherited this 66,000 mile '72 Comet from my wife's uncle. He called it a Mercury. It has a 250/C4 and huge 9 inch 4 lug drum brakes. Not sure what to do with it but I don't want another "race" car. I have accumulated some Granada discs and a 3.55 5 lug 8 inch rear plus some other stuff but haven't had the energy to install any of it. IMHO it needs twice pipes, lowering and some polished Torque Thrusts. Anybody got any ideas?

Cut the shock towers, sell the house, and buy a Boss '9 to stuff in the Comet...You can take it from there.

Will the 9 inch drums still be OK?

Umm, maybe you should read the thread over in the tech section on drum brakes and stopping in time. Perhaps the phrase "pucker factor" would be most appropriate in this case!!

4 wheel drums on these cars don't work too awefully bad...considering. I ran 4 wheel drums on the Maverick race car for 11 years, mid 6's in the 1/8 mile, and 8.50's in the 1000'...almost 120 mph (and really short shut downs). They worked a lot better than the granada discs I had on the '74 Maverick....a LOT better!

'Course I did the Mustang II suspension upgrade and metric rear discs, now it stops a whole lot better...but then again, the car is 400 lb lighter now too.
