Compression Pressure Test

Does anyone know if I can do one of these without having the engine in the car?

Compression Pressure Test

Thanks Guys. I did it today on a 1973 302ci and here are the readings I got:
1-170psi
2-160psi
3-160psi
4-160psi
5-170psi
6-165psi
7-165psi
8-160psi
Is that engine good to go?

Compression Pressure Test

The compression is high enough - and then some.
Was the engine warm? was the throttle held open?
Was there oil in the cylinders?
The compression looks to be 8.5 or 9 to 1 - that would be close for a stock 73 302 with low miles.

And how do you determine the static compression ratio based on cranking pressure?
