Re: What made you decide on a Maverick??
It was the first car I ever owned and the big sign in the window said,
"$99.00 WHY WALK???"
As I was walking to work (to pick up my paycheck) on Broadway Boulevard in Denver colorado in may or june of 1985, I saw that sign and thought to myself, Hell yeah! Why the hell do I gotta walk?
$168 was my paycheck, Tax Title and License for the Why Walk 1971 302 2V C-4 Maverick that you start with a screwdriver was a WHOPPING $168.50!
It just so happened that my best friend at the time carried a Lucky Half Dollar with him at all times and he was flipping it in the air when the dealership guy said the total, so I signed my check over to him and my buddy flipped him his lucky Fifty Cent Piece and we smoked the tires about 100 feet out of that used car lot!
That is WHY I chose a Maverick....

Re: What made you decide on a Maverick??
When I was 15 I found a '73 Grabber in the local trader for $400.Kinda rusty, but had a 302,auto in the floor & bucket seats. Some junkyard slot mags, duals w/glasspacks,bondo/primer paintjob and a stereo and I was stylin(so I thought anyway). It was a good car.I really wanted a '66-67 Fairlane, but even in the late '80s those cars were bringing pretty good. The Maverick was cheap to buy, simple to work on and fairly economical for a v8 powered car driven by a newly licensed teen anyway.

Re: What made you decide on a Maverick??
Man I love Mavericks, always have, I remember my uncle Charles had one of the red, white and blue ones he bought new. At one time I had 6 all at the same time, was building a 72 Comet, V8, auto, Grabber Blue, when we left the beach (hell) heading back to the hills I had to leave them all behind and haven't had once since but I'd love to get my hands on one again some day.

Re: What made you decide on a Maverick??
i remember the day i got my maverick my first car , i was 11 turning 12 and my dad picked me up from school and told me today i was going to get my first car today he said i had a choice a 72-73 buick apollo hatchback, a pontiac fiero
and the maverick .So i said lets check out the mav .So my dad and i arrived at this church in pasadena in the getto,so there was my mav in the corner of the parking lot two rear flats all the hubcaps were intact, but someone broke the drivers side win and stole the stereo . So some time goes buy and we re talking to the sister and priest and 3 to 4 gang members come out and start maddoging me and my dad but we are both two big guys we could a took them out.but anyways back to my story , so some time goes by and well as you know now the tow guy comes in to take the 72 home ,we only had to give a 100 to the church as a donation so i still have my mav and im almost finished ,all i have to do is rebuild my 200 inline six& c4 trans , so far i added custom wheels ,added a brand new brake system, replaced the gauges
that the gangstersa broke ,lots of engine work , etc just working on my mav has taught me so much !!!

Re: What made you decide on a Maverick??
I want a Maverick so bad! I have heard my dad talk about a Maverick he had back in the early seventies a couple times. When my Grandparents had their 60th anniversary last year, there was a table set out with a lot of pictures of them throughout the years, and sure enough there was one of them standing in front of my Dad's Maverick.
I would love to find a Maverick, and restore it with my dad as a father/son project, though it would be ME teaching HIM how to work on cars, lol, he doesn't know much about them.

Re: What made you decide on a Maverick??
Small car, V8, easy to work on (when necessary) and decent milage. Who could ask for more? (3 of them)
Well, I do have a 66 Mustang too....... so I do have more.

Re: What made you decide on a Maverick??
I like the styling of them. Fastback styling is always a hit!!
Plus, they ruled the roost in Pro Stock for a time back in the 70's.
They are small, lightweight, easy to work on, and relatively inexpensive.
I dream of building a full tube chassis car with a twin turbo Boss headed big block, all tucked under a mostly stock looking early Maverick body.
The Chevy clowns would never know what hit em!!

Re: What made you decide on a Maverick??
My first car was a 73 Maverick. Paid $500 for it in 1979. Yellow with black Grabber trim and Playboy tires (remember them)?
It had been raced by a transmission shop and then they it put back to almost stock ( It still had headers, traction bars, Hurst shifter and a huge scoop on it.)
I really liked that car, great first car for a young guy still going to high school. Fixed it up a bit and sold it for $1800. Used the proceeds to buy a 69 Mustang.
