8" rearend rebuild

anyone have info on the 8" rearend rebuild? am looking for a site on how to rebuild..rearend in Maverick makes a loud clunk sound when placed into drive..not ujoints..i was told you could take apart the rearend and adjust the gears closer togeather to eliminate alot of the noise..done by tightening one side and looseing the other, but need to see or have instructions on how to get to...i think its going to be remove axles and then bolts on rearend but ? any help would be great from some of you guys that have tore into the 8"...thanks yergntiger93@yahoo.com

Re: 8" rearend rebuild

If there is enough play in the gears that they require adjustment the gears are probably in need of replacement. The hardening on the gears is not deep enough to allow for adjustment for wear beyond about .003".

I've seen many with the clunk you describe that ended up needing spider gears, washers and shafts. They wear out over time and even though it appears that your R&P backlash is excessive, when the center section is removed and checked, it's O.K. then you discover that the slack is the take-up in the spider gears and related parts (side gears too) that allow the ring gear and carrier to move quite a bit when shifted from REVERSE to PARK and vice versa. Sure, the Ring & Pinion could be worn too, but I write this to offer the benefit of my experience in addition to the perceived "obvious" cause.
