Exclamation Transmission Help!!!

Hey, i'm new to the whole fixing cars deal and i'm trying to teach myself. so far i dont know very much but i basically have the gist of things...

my transmission is dead. i'm going to take it out and put a new one in. i have a '75 ford maverick. my question(s), how do i turn my automatic 3spd transmission into a manual. i would rather do that now, seeing as though my tranny's dead, instead of fixing the tranny and getting it converted to a manual later. does anyone have any diagrams or instructions on how to do such a thing? What type of transmission am i going to need?

all the help i can get would be sweet.
thanks-

-Robb

Re: Transmission Help!!!

ABRACADABRA, has always been a favorite for me...

Seriously though you will need several things you currently do not have on your car.

1: A Manual Tranny

2: A Maverick Clutch Quadrant and pedal and linkage etc...

3: Manual Transmission crossmember

4: Flywheel

5: Clutch Set

6: Pilot Shaft Bearing

7: Clutch return spring

8: Manual Transmission Shifter (for what ever style tranny you pick, the shifter must match, and there are a lot of them...)

9: Manual tranny shift Linkage

10: Gotta remove the front seats and carpet

11: Cut hole in floor for linkage...

The list goes on and on and you will need in excess of $1,000 bucks to do all this... Unless you find a donor car to get the majority of your parts off of.
The tranny will cost you $500 to $1,000 depending on what you want....

Good Luck!

Re: Transmission Help!!!

What engine? With the 302 I know you have a few options ranging from 3-6 speeds that will physically bolt behind it. I'm not up on what you can do behind a sixer.

What I would do is swap in a T-5 out of a Mustang. They're strong, have overdrive and plentiful. And the pre-fabbed crossmember is coming very soon from a member of the maverick forum at mmb.maverick.to.

The clutch pedal and linkages for Mavericks are getting very hard to find outside of a car and there is a big demand for them so you might end up paying a chunk of change for it.

Re: Transmission Help!!!

Hey guys. thanks for the help. i'm not sure if i actually understood half of what you said seeing as though i'm still a little new to this. but the list is really helping. i have a 302 v6... from what i've heard from other people, i can basically get a four speed and thats about it?
there's a couple used maverick ads up around my area selling for parts so that'll be good but then again, i dont think i remember any of them being manuals... but there's a mustang junkyard/car lot down in albany, and if i assume correctly, most mustang stuff can be swapped? but idk which things can and cannot.

again. thanks for the list. and sorry for the long wait for a reply... no i'm not spam.

Re: Transmission Help!!!

Rudzek,
Mavericks never came with 4 speeds - that is a swap that some do for performance. Factory cars came with 3 speed manual and automatic transmissions. The automatic - C4 - is the stronger of the two but you need to keep them cool and improve the shifting so they shift faster. I believe you will find that it is cheaper to have the C4 rebuilt than it will be to put a manual in the car. If you just need a manual for fun then go for it - you will learn a lot in the process.

Re: Transmission Help!!!

Rudy... You gotta BOOK UP man.

Go buy a Motors or a Chilton Manual.
Better yet, go to the Library and read in a Haynes or a Chilton about Ford Motors before going any further.

You need a LOT of basic tutoring about Fords before going any further.

Plus you will need about $2,000 to start and finish this job, and that's doing it the cheap way.

Ford never made a V6 in 302 cubic inches.

You CAN put a 2 speed auto, a 3 speed auto even an AOD 4 speed auto behind your 302.

You CAN put a 3 speed standard, a 4 speed standard and a 5 speed standard in that Maverick. But doing any of the above is going to take a LOT of attention on your behalf, unless you wanna let someone else do it for you. Then all you need is money. Likely a LOT more than $2K...

So start reading, and come up with a game plan. You got 32,742 members here that have experience in one or more things automotively related to Fords, and of them there are 2,683 Active Members that participate on a normal basis.

This forum is the premier place on the WWW to get info on your Ford and how to modify it.

Get ready and let's do this! (get a camera)
