Rear end is 300:1 and would like a little bit more from the light, would a 350:1 be a good change-over and still be sensible on the highway. Need some chatter about the Hurst Comp Plus Shifter compared to the stock shifter (Top Loader)
Thanks, Bob

Is this mostly and/or completely street driven, and what size tires do you run?

Just my opinion, but I've spent more money on gearsets over the years than I'd care to admit, and 3.5 is what I've decided is the upper end of "versatile" for highway use with no overdrive. Beyond that and I start wearing out my teeth on the highway. If you're running about a 26" tire (like a 15/235/60), you'll be around 3,200RPM @ 70MPH vs. 2,700 with the 3.00s, and at about 4,100RPM @ 90, so the practical aspects of driving on the highway (passing, etc) are pretty much perfect for a typical street combo, and you'll definitely feel the difference from the light. You can see a pic of my shifter at my website, if that's the
one your talking about, I love it and added a short throw
stick which help, as for rear's I run a 3.55 in my w/ 205/70/14 tires and I'm turning 3300 rpm at 70, it is a
bit unbearable for trips over 10 miles. However it does seem to pull out of the hole well. I 've got T-5 to go in it and can't wait as rpm's well go down to 2200 in overdrive at 70.

Thanks for the reply 69convert. Would a happy medium be the 3.23? ga289stocker thanks for your web site. I do beleive that I will go with the hurst shifter, short throw. Im very new to web site forums etc.
Bought my 67 fastback in 78 for 650.00 and it sat in my garage as a shelf for years before I could start working on it. Will try to figure out how to get a picture of it on this web site.
Again thanks for your inputs.

If you ever plan on putting in a T5 then I think the perfect gear ratio for that tranny would be 373's, but if you just keep the top loader 4 speed then don't go any lower the 3.23's. I run 26 inch tall tires an AOD with a NON lockup 3000 stall converter and a 4.11 rear gear and I only run 2,700 at 70. And if I had lock up that would drop it even more about 300 to 400 rpm, and that is with 4.11's in the rear. So if you can save your money and get a overdrive in that car. You will be much happier. When I put the overdrive in mine that was one on the best MODS that I have ever done to my car. Good luck.

I'm running 3.50's with my C4, and I turn 3500RPM at 70 mph. 3000 at 60 - great off the line (if it weren't for that bog), and at 60mph, passing is a breeze with no downshift (cruising right at the beginning of the power band)

if you have an 8" you'll have to go with 3.55's .If you have a 9" you can get a 3.50.

They're the perfect street strip combo for a non OD car.
