HELP !!!!!!!!!!! whats considered a 64&1/2 vs 65 mustang ?

You know that has been an argument since day one.
Ford says there is no 64 1/2 only 65.
Some say October is the cutoff, some say September and even August.
All I know is mine is a half/half breed.
Some 64 1/2 parts and some 65.
Sort of like they were starting 65 run and used the last of the 64 1/2 parts.
I call it a 64 1/2 because it has more of them then the 65.
BTW mine is a 15 Sep 64 car.

Those are good indicators, but not concrete. My car was built on 4 Nov64. It\'s a 65 car. It has a ring on the gas cap, but the blower off position is in the middle.

HELP !!!!!!!!!!! whats considered a 64&1/2 vs 65 mustang ?

The car has the notched headlight covers. It also has an "A" on the vent knob. I'm trying to get a mastercylinder for the brakes but have runinto a small snag. The existing MC has a cover that uses 2 small screws to hold the cover tight. the MC autostone has uses a screw-on type. It will work but it has no cever so I didn;t get it. Does anyone know where I can locate wither the OEM type MC or a cover for the AZ MC ?
BTW, ID # is 1612XX

thanks..............

HELP !!!!!!!!!!! whats considered a 64&1/2 vs 65 mustang ?

It's always been my understanding that anything after around mid September 64 when the fastback first came out, is not considered a 64 1/2. I do know that 64 1/2 parts made there way onto the early 65s though.
My Mustang is a July 64 coupe, and it is a D code 289.
64 1/2 engine combos
170 6 cylinder
260 V8 2V
289 V8 4V (low compression)

65 engines
200 6 cylinder
289 V8 2V
289 V8 4V (A code)
289 V8 4V (hipo)

Other 64 1/2 differences:
Metal weatherstriping outside of door glass is black on 64 1/2, chrome on 65.

Louvered on radiator support in front of battery box on 64 1/2, not on 65.

Carpet is hemmed on side edges near doors and does not go up under metal door entry strips on 64 1/2 and has vinyl same color as interior that does got to door strip. On 65 carpet continues all the way up under door edges.

64 1/2 carpet has heel pad and no toe pad. 65 has both heel and toe pad.

64 1/2 has two speed heater switch that shuts off in the middle position. 65 has three speed switch that shuts off with switch set all the way to the drivers side.

64 1/2 air vent knob has a letter "A". 65 vent knob is blank.

64 1/2 had a different horn ring attachment then 65.

64 1/2 seatbelts use an eye bolt to attach the seatbelts to the floor. 65 use a hex head bolt.

There are other differences that have already been noted above, and a few more.

Underneath the drivers and passengers seats in the early 65's, the seat riser has a large hole in it whereas in '65 they went to a solid piece just with an indentation.

The D-code is a 4-v 289 and is 64 only, the 65 4-v is an A-code. another thing of real early ones is the passenger seat does not slide forward or back, just flips down. also you might have 3 "shark fin" gilles on the radiator support in front of the battery. I know more but cant think of em right now, mine was made april 22 1964 so its pretty early.

According to your VIN it was made in June 65 so there is no doubt that your car was built prior to the mid August 65 option changes. Congrats you got a 64.5
